After a hiatus from Star Wars movies for a while, "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" is coming to theaters. Not only does it have a release date, but Patty Jenkins ("Wonder Woman 1984," "Monster") will take the megaphone and break new ground in a galaxy far, far away. The plot of [Star Wars: Rogue Squadron] is likely to be the subject of much debate, as Disney and Jenkins plan to mix elements from the Extended Universe books and video games with a lot of new material. Lucasfilm's official announcement reveals that "the story will introduce a new generation of Starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives on boundary-pushing high-speed thrill rides, moving the saga into a future era of the galaxy."

"Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" was announced by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy at the 2020 Disney Investors Day event. Kennedy also revealed that a yet-to-be-titled Star Wars project starring Taika Waititi is in the works.

Don't get into the X-wing too soon, as you'll have to wait a while. The release date for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is December 22, 2023.

Of course, Patty Jenkins will direct Rogue Squadron and Matthew Jenkins will write the script in June 2021, but Disney has not confirmed this Variety report. Jenkins' previous films include Love & Monsters and Invention of Lying.

There is no trailer yet, and given that the series will be released in late 2023, it will be a long time before a trailer is released; expect something to be announced in the spring or summer of 2023.

However, director Patty Jenkins did provide a bit of footage to get us excited about her entry into the Star Wars universe with this video used to announce "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron":

"Star Wars/ Rogue Squadron" is only an adaptation of the video game and book of the same name, you would be mistaken. But don't worry, it's not.

Patty Jenkins told IGN, "We're doing something original ...... that is heavily influenced by the game and the book. We're doing something original while being heavily influenced by the game and the book. ...... There is a lot to be recognized and understood for the excellence of all of those things. She told the Associated Press that the film "pays homage" to the books and games that came before it, but "we have to take it into a new era. [Luke Skywalker was captain] might make reference to the work of Wedge Antilles, who created the elite pilot group of Rogue Squadron. The Rogue Squadron books were part of the Star Wars Extended Universe, but "to give the filmmakers maximum creative freedom and leave the audience with an element of surprise and discovery, Star Wars Episodes 7-IX will not tell the same story that was told in the Extended Universe after Return of the Jedi announced "will not be told" and were essentially erased.

In that same announcement, the people behind Star Wars left the door open for this kind of film, stating that "the creators of the new Star Wars entertainment will have full access to the rich content of the extended universe."

Director Jenkins told THR that the film may also serve as a jumping-off point for the post-Skywalker saga era. It's really exciting in that sense."
