Lovecraft Country Season 2 has been cancelled – Here's what we know

"Lovecraft Country" Season 2 will not be produced after HBO canceled this supernatural drama.

Fans hoped that the monster-filled adventure was not over, but HBO decided not to produce another season of this show.

The horror series is set during the racially segregated Jim Crow era in 1950s America. The characters confront monsters ranging from the supernatural to the racist and human.

The story follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he takes a road trip with his friend Leticia (Journey Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to search for his missing father. Along the way, they encounter vampire-like creatures and menacing human cops. The show balances fantastic stories with the dangerous realities of being black.

In early July, HBO said in a statement, "We will not be moving forward with a second season of 'Lovecraft Country. We are grateful to the talented cast and crew who have created this groundbreaking series, and to Misha Green for his dedication and artistry. And to our fans, thank you for taking part in this journey."

Following the cancellation, Green posted plans for "Lovecraft Country" Season 2, which never materialized.

"A taste of the bible for Season 2," she tweeted. 'Wish I could have brought you Lovecraft Country: spremacy. Thanks to everyone who watched and got involved. #noconfederate."

Her post included a map announcing that Season 2 will "begin in a new world, and that new world is the country where the United States of America once stood." Called the "Sovereign States of America," the country is divided into four regions: the Jeffersonian Commonwealth in the northeast, the New Negro Republic in the south, the Whitelands in between, and the tribal nations in the west.

After receiving Emmy nominations (including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Major), and Outstanding Lead Actress (Smollett)), Green tweeted an overview of "Lovecraft Country" Season 2, divided into 10 episode sketches, with a Season 3 and beyond sections as well.

Plans for "Lovecraft Country" Season 2 are unlikely to materialize, but were set by the action-packed Season 1 finale.

Atticus (a.k.a. Tick) and Leticia (a.k.a. Letty) obtain the Book of Names and read it to travel to the realm of their ancestors, where they consult Hannah, Tick's mother, great-grandmother, and ancestor, on how to defeat Christina, who will achieve immortality on the autumnal equinox.

They head for Ardam, only to find that they are too late. Christina, disguised as Ruby, cuts Tick for his blood and becomes immortal. But Tick knew all along that he was going to die, so Zia uses Kumho's tentacles to link him to Christina. Tik's sacrifice allows Letty's magic to take effect, depriving the whites, including Christina, of all magic. Letty declares, "The magic is ours now."

Christina remains trapped in the rubble, while Dee arrives and uses his new mechanical arm to crush her to death.

Finally, Letty, Gia, and friends carry Tick's body away. In a voice-over, Tik asks his father Montrose to become the parents of his and Letty's unborn baby.
