It's official: Netflix is entering the game, starting with mobile

Netflix is entering the gaming business, it has been revealed.

Rumors have been flying that the streaming distribution giant is ready to enter the gaming business, and the first details of its plans were finally revealed in its Q2 earnings report. While not revealing everything, Netflix announced that it will first focus on mobile gaming and will go head-to-head with the likes of Apple and Google.

In the report, Netflix said it is "in the early stages of further expansion into gaming, building on previous work on interactivity (e.g., Black Mirror Bandersnatch) and our Stranger Things game."

"We see games as another new content category, similar to our expansion into original films, animation, and unscripted TV," the report continued. Games, like movies and series, are included in Netflix memberships at no additional cost."

The fact that Netflix is starting with mobile titles, and specifically mentioned the "Stranger Things" game, tells us some of what we can expect Netflix COO Greg Peters, in his report about the game, adding that the vast bank of original content would provide fertile ground for the game.

"We are in the business of creating great worlds, great story lines, and great characters.

Peters also said the game would have no advertising and would not include in-app purchases.

"We also feel that our subscription model brings some opportunity to focus on a set of gaming experiences that are currently not well served by the dominant monetization model in gaming," Peters said.

"We don't have to think about advertising, we don't have to think about in-game purchases or other monetization, we don't have to think about other per-title purchases, we don't have to think about the cost of the game, and we can focus on the game experience.

While mobile gaming will be Netflix's initial focus, Peters also revealed that console games may also be in the future, saying, "Ultimately, we're looking at all the devices we currently serve as candidates for some kind of gaming experience." Given that the Netflix app is available on everything from the PS5 and Xbox Series X to numerous TVs and the best streaming devices, there is plenty of room left for expansion.

According to earlier reports, Netflix has hired former Oculus and EA exec Mike Verdu to oversee the gaming division, but other information has been thin until now.

No word yet on when the first game will appear, but a recent Bloomberg report suggests it could appear within the next year.

It is also not entirely clear how Netflix will distribute these games, although Bloomberg's initial reports indicate that they will be available on the Netflix app along with Netflix's existing portfolio of movies and TV shows, details on whether the games will be streamed or downloaded from the app store have yet to be revealed.

There is still much for Netflix to reveal, but it is unlikely to be answered for some time yet. Instead, we hope you enjoy Netflix's best shows and TV series.
