Marvel (Captain Marvel 2): Everything We Know So Far

"Captain Marvel 2" has been officially named "The Marvels". It is an appropriate title for this new addition to the Marvel family. Recent news indicates that Ms. Marvel will no longer be the only marvel in the MCU, with the addition of Carol Danvers as well as Ms. Marvel.

Brie Larson's next superhero adventure is still ahead, in the 2022 section of the upcoming Marvel movies. In other words, it is much further along than "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Eternals." However, Captain Marvel has become an important figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this show will be associated with not one but two of Marvel's television shows.

Here's everything we know so far about The Marvels (aka Captain Marvel 2), including release date, cast, and Wolverine rumors.

The Marvels will be released on November 11, 2022. This has been a known release date for some time, but was reaffirmed in a video posted by Marvel Studios hyping the MCU Phase 4 film.

This is much later than expected; MCU informant Charles Murphy had initially leaked that "Captain Marvel 2" would be released on July 29, 2022. Murphy had accurately predicted the entire Marvel Phase 4 lineup in July 2019, but the Covid 19 pandemic shook up all of Marvel's plans. Kevin Feige also confirmed a May 6 release date for Black Panther 2 at D23 (via The Verge), adding further weight to this speculation.

According to Production Weekly via ComicBook.com, "The Marvels" was slated to begin production in May 2021. No leaks of the set have yet been released.

However, filming has not yet begun. No official announcement has yet been made as to when, but star Brie Larson explained on her YouTube channel that she is suspending video production because her film career has not yet restarted.

Director Nia DaCosta ("Candyman" remake, "Little Woods") told EW that Marvel has given her a lot of creative freedom: "It's amazing. [It's] more freedom than anything I've ever had. We're all just comic geeks who want to make great comic book movies."

The cast of Marvels includes three well-known roles. Brie Larson, of course, reprises her role as Carol Danvers, a half-Kree, half-human, intergalactic hero.

"Wander Vision" fans will also recognize Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambo in "Wander Vision." In a post on her Instagram reel, Parris showed off some of her training to become fighting fit. She did not specify that this was for "Marvels," but it seems very relevant.

The third member of the Marvels family is Iman Verani, who plays Ms. Marvel in the Disney Plus series of the same name.

On June 15, news broke of the next actor to join the "Marvels" cast. According to Cosmopolitan, a Korean media outlet's translation of Star News, actor Park Seo-jung (Itaewon class) will play an unannounced role. There was no official confirmation from Marvel or from the actor's agent.

It would also not surprise me if Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury, nor would it surprise me if Ben Mendelsohn appears as Talos, a seemingly evil but actually lovable Skrull.

Rumor has it that Henry Cavill (yes, Superman and the Witcher himself) will appear in "Captain Marvel 2" as the X-Men icon Wolverine. This incredibly sketchy rumor originated on a site called "The Digital Weekly," which does not appear to cite any reliable sources.

However, speculation that Henry Cavill will join the MCU as Wolverine is not entirely crazy. The "Man of Steel" star was rumored to be in talks with Marvel about a possible MCU appearance in 2019; according to an interview with IGN, it is already known that the X-Men will appear in the MCU, and Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige has said that "a completely different way, he wants to bring the mutants into the picture. And what better way to do that than to bring the X-Men's most iconic character into a Captain Marvel movie starring one of the hottest actors around.

No trailers available for Captain Marvel 2 yet. Given the release date and production status, nothing will be available until late 2021 or early 2022.

However, there is a clip of Marvel revealing the film's official title as "The Marvels."

WARNING: Spoilers for Marvel Cinematic Universe films follow.

The first Captain Marvel film was set in the 90s and ended with Danvers defeating his former mentor Yon-Rogg and helping the stranded Skrulls find a new home. Later, we saw Danvers in the present day in The Avengers: Endgame, where he helped the Avengers defeat Thanos in the pivotal "Battle for Earth." In a post-credits scene in "Spider-Man: Far From Home," Nick Fury secretly collaborates with Skrull in space, perhaps as part of the S.W.O.R.D. (essentially the space version of S.H.I.E.L.D.) that many comic fans have come to expect, protecting against intergalactic threats It is now clear that the S.H.I.E.L.D. is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.

So the big question is whether "Captain Marvel 2" will bring things to the present day or explore an in-between era, like "Wonder Woman 1984." We could see a movie about what Danvers was doing in the galaxy when the Avengers were just getting started. Or "Captain Marvel 2" could focus on the present day and form a new team of superheroes now that Iron Man and Captain America are out.

In 2019, Brie Larson herself said she wanted to bring Kamala Khan, the modern-day Ms. Marvel, into "Captain Marvel 2". And now that it's happening, we could easily see "Marvel" give Danvers the role of Khan's mentor.
