Today, Cavendish had a 38-point advantage, but Matthews could be 20 points closer to the green jersey. Nevertheless, Cavendish is one win away from breaking Eddy Merck's record.

The three-week race now has 184 riders from 23 teams covering 21 stages, including three summit finishes and two individual time trials. The best all-around riders will win at the end.

The 2021 Tour de France will be held on the same summer dates as usual, after last year's race was postponed to the fall due to a coronavirus outbreak. This means that it will be only nine months since Tadej Pogacar won his first Tour de France.

Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma), and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadier) are among the favorites in this year's race.
