Marvel movies to watch before the Black Widow — where to watch and in what order

After several delays, Black Widow is finally here, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film since 2019 to explore the protagonist's backstory, and from our own viewing, we can say that the unexpectedly long wait was more or We can say that it was more or less worth the unexpectedly long wait.

Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, has played a major role in several important storylines since her first appearance in the MCU over a decade ago. Her own solo film has long since been released, but it is well worth reviewing the previous Marvel films in order before enjoying her latest adventure.

The MCU currently consists of 20 feature films and three Disney Plus Original Series. The amount of content to consume is enormous. If you only want to see films related to Black Widow, below is a list of Marvel films to watch and the order in which you should watch them.

So, before you play "Black Widow" on your Disney Plus Premiere Access or watch it in theaters, here is our best advice on what to watch. In addition, one film worth watching again after seeing "The Black Widow" is also noted below.

To date, the Black Widow has appeared in seven Marvel films, not including her own solo films. These unfold chronologically, so it is best to watch them in the order of their release. Marvel movies to watch before Black Widow include:

1. "Iron Man 2" (2010): Black Widow only appears in "Iron Man 2" for a little over 10 minutes, but she makes a big impression. Her MCU debut is widely considered to be one of Marvel's weaker efforts, but it is still worth watching as Natasha takes down a security team in a very clever fight sequence.

2. "The Avengers" (2012): In the all-heroic "The Avengers," Black Widow teams up with Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor to defeat the villain Loki. The film also depicts her longtime collaboration with Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. The film is as fun and engrossing as it was nearly a decade ago.

3. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014): one of the MCU's best films to date and the first in which the Black Widow is given a significant role. This sequel to the original "Captain America" is a great action epic.

4. Avengers Age of Ultron (2015): a sequel to The Avengers that sows the seeds of romance between Black Widow and Bruce Banner. Overall, the film is quite complex, but there are some hints about Natasha's past that will be developed in the Black Widow film.

5. Captain America: Civil War (2016): It is unfortunate that Black Widow has a bit of a minor role in this third Captain America film, but since this new film falls right after Civil War in the MCU timeline, the Black Widow movie story will play a major role. However, the movie itself is still plenty of fun, and it's practically an Avengers movie, as it features so many Marvel heroes.

6. Avengers: Infinity War (2018): In the third Avengers film, Black Widow appears with a new hairstyle and two blitz batons. The superhero team must stop the mighty Thanos from using the Infinity Stone to wipe out half of life in the universe. No pressure. If you rewatch "Infinity War" after seeing "Black Widow," you may find that you didn't realize it was an Easter egg.

7. "Avengers Endgame" (2019): the culmination of the first decade of Marvel films, "Avengers/Endgame" features many Black Widows trying to become the leader of the decimated Avengers. The film is full of thrilling set pieces and tear-jerking scenes.

There are many ways to watch the above Marvel films featuring Black Widow. You can opt for the physical Blu-ray, or you can rent/buy each film through your preferred VOD service. But the easiest (and cheapest) way to see every moment of the MCU is through Disney Plus.

To celebrate the release of the latest Marvel film, Disney Plus has organized the Black Widow Collection. This is a compilation of the above Black Widow feature films and the Marvel Legends series, useful if you don't have time to watch all seven films before seeing the Black Widow solo film.

The service is loaded with additional Marvel content, including classic animated series and upcoming original programming, not to mention Disney, Pixar, and Star Wars content. It is well worth the relatively small monthly subscription fee.
