MacBook Pro2021 can get big webcam upgrade

The MacBook's webcam has long remained at 720p, but according to one leaker, that will change with the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 model and the MacBook Pro 16-inch 2021 model.

In fact, it's not just the MacBook Pro that will be upgraded, this leaker believes: according to @dylandkt, the informant who correctly said that the 2021 iPad Pro will have an M1 chip, "the entire Mac lineup" will be upgraded to 1080p will be upgraded to 1080p.

In a year when remote work has become so commonplace in the wake of the pandemic, the clarity of computer webcams and microphones has suddenly become critical. Indeed, in the early days of the coronavirus, webcams, microphones, and other products ideal for telecommuting soared as people sought to make their home offices conference-ready.

Thankfully, the virus seems to be receding in some countries, but there are plenty of workplaces that will insist on a fully remote or hybrid setup in the future; the Mac's improved camera capabilities could sway many people looking to buy the best laptop.

If @dylandkt's tweet is correct - and it's important to take this as a rumor rather than a confirmation at this point - this wouldn't be the first Mac to receive a 1080p upgrade. The colorful new 24-inch iMac also received a camera upgrade, which was one of the things we were most impressed with.

Senior Editor Alex Wawro "struggled to get the iMac 2021 to deliver bad images" during our review. He writes, "During several video calls, the iMac consistently delivered excellent image quality, with accurate colors and enough clarity to spot dust and fluff on a shirt."

Other than the added expense of a high-quality lint roller to remove HD dust, a similar upgrade for the MacBook Pro would certainly be welcome. Other rumors surrounding the new MacBooks suggest a mini LED screen, more ports, the return of MagSafe charging, and a new Apple M1X chip, which could be a significant upgrade overall.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are expected to go into production in Q3 and could debut in September along with the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch 7.

Nevertheless, the company is wary of announcing too many things at the same time, and may delay until October or November to allow the laptops their moment in the limelight.
