Stimulus Check: more than 2,000 million signed petitions for monthly monthly2.5 million payments

A Change.org petition demanding a $2,000 monthly stimulus check for all Americans has garnered (and counting) more than 2.5 million signatures, with no indication that further pandemic relief is being planned.

The petition was launched by Vermont resident (and Denver restaurateur) Stephanie Bonin and her husband in March 2020, as then-President Donald Trump and Congress were negotiating the CARES Act, which would provide the first round of $1,200 stimulus

Bonin urged Congress to "immediately assist families with $2,000 for adults and $1,000 for children" and to continue "for as long as the [coronavirus] crisis continues."

Support for this idea continues to grow. The signature drive took about a month to gather one million signatures, nearly a year to gather a second million, and has surged from 2.3 million in early June 2021 to 2.5 million a month later.

"We still haven't recovered and need to pay our basic bills," says one recent signer.

"We are without a babysitter who can keep her job. Still struggling very much," wrote another.

Despite this relatively small amount of public assistance, there is no indication that Congress or the Biden administration plans to issue additional stimulus checks or ongoing monthly payments to all Americans.

Indeed, many states have recently discontinued supplemental unemployment benefits in the hopes of encouraging people to return to work, but it is not clear whether these weekly checks are the primary cause of job shortages among low-income Americans.

In addition, low-income families with dependent children under age 17 will receive the first of six accelerated child tax credit payments next week (July 15).

The expanded benefits will provide up to $3,600 ($300 per month) for each child under age 6 and up to $3,000 ($250 per month) for each child ages 6 to 17, half of which will be paid in advance.

Families with individual filer income of $75,000 or more and couple filer income of $150,000 or more would qualify for the pre-2021 regular deduction of $2,000 per child under age 17, but would not qualify for the monthly advance payment.

A number of proposals to provide more stimulus were tossed around by legislators, but none have moved forward, and little has been said on the issue in recent months.
