iPhone13 portrait mode video is still the largest camera upgrade

Avid smartphone videographers may be in for some good news -- as the iPhone 13 will reportedly feature a new mode that will take their videography skills to a serious level.

According to YouTube's Everything Apple Pro, which details a rumor from leaker Max Weinbach, the iPhone 13 will feature a new video portrait mode. This appears to be based on the portrait mode already available on recent iPhone stills within Apple's own Camera app.

While many third-party iOS camera apps offer portrait video, none are as widely used as the default app. Adding portrait mode video to the next iPhone's camera app would be a big change for the average iPhone user, and would simplify things for power users who are already familiar with the effect.

Portrait mode video, already used in professional sports broadcasts like the NFL, would make close-ups of players more realistic. The soft-focus background makes the subject stand out, and it is obvious that this feature will rapidly gain popularity.

Other Android phones, such as the OnePlus 9 Pro, offer portrait mode video, but its introduction on the new iPhone should have a much bigger impact.

The introduction of portrait mode video this year should not come as much of a surprise. For starters, iOS 15 introduces a portrait mode-style background blurring option to FaceTime, similar to existing features in Google Meet and Zoom. Thus, it would be relatively less difficult for Apple to migrate this software to the camera app than it would be to do so from scratch.

We have previously heard that Apple is reportedly introducing a new ultra-wide camera lens on the iPhone 13 Pro model, which will also introduce autofocus. Combined with the larger sensor, which is rumored to be the other major change, the iPhone 13 should easily unseat the iPhone 12 Pro Max and take its place as the best camera phone available today.

While there appear to be many similarities between the iPhone 12 and the upcoming iPhone, these rumored new features point to how Apple can innovate without making major changes to the iPhone's exterior features or hardware, and help it maintain its position as one of the best phones to help it maintain its status as one of the best mobile phones.

It won't be long before we find out if this rumor is true or not: iPhones are usually announced in September, so there are only three months left until the iPhone 13 (or possibly named iPhone 12s) appears.
