OnePlus9T can get a powerful 108MP Hasselblad camera

Update: The OnePlus 8T never materialized, and one leaker claims that the OnePlus 10 Pro could be unveiled in early January at CES 2022. It is slated to be OnePlus' next flagship smartphone.

The OnePlus 9 series may have much improved photography compared to its predecessor, but even bigger upgrades may be on the way.

According to American Megatrends, which is running rumors on Twitter, the OnePlus 9T may feature a 108MP camera, thanks to a partnership with Hasselblad that can already be experienced in the OnePlus 9 series.

The OnePlus 9 Pro has a 50MP camera lens, so if this rumor is true, the OnePlus 9T would be a significant upgrade. It would also be the first smartphone from the BBK group (OnePlus and Oppo) to feature such a high-resolution lens. [But 108MP cameras are by no means rare. Samsung has one on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and various Xiaomi and Realmi models have them as well; the advantage of a 108MP camera is that it provides more detail, which is useful if you want to crop the image after shooting. However, we found that the S21 Ultra gave much better results outdoors on a sunny day.

Of course, there is more to a camera than hardware, and resolution is no indicator of quality; if OnePlus wants to continue to improve, it needs to tweak and upgrade its camera software, and with the OnePlus 9 Pro, especially with its partnership with Hasselblad, it is possible that the S21 Ultra will be the first camera to offer the same level of quality. While many positive changes were made, more could have been done to improve the end result.

The only question is whether there will be a OnePlus 9T Pro this year; the OnePlus 8T came out as a standalone device and was largely not that big of an upgrade; the possibility of a 108MP camera suggests that such issues may not be repeated.

American Megatrends is not well known and cannot be trusted to provide accurate information.

Will the OnePlus 9T have a 108MP camera; we won't know for sure until OnePlus actually launches the phone. Nevertheless, it would be a nice upgrade, especially if OnePlus can improve its software to match.
