iPhone13 can finally get reverse wireless charging

Wireless charging has been part of Apple's mobile arsenal since 2017, but the iPhone 13 could be the first major upgrade since then.

This is according to the latest video from EverythingApplePro, which quotes well-informed Max Weinbach on the rumor that the iPhone 13 model will feature a "slightly larger" wireless charging coil. This, in turn, could be used to enable reverse wireless charging in the new phones, but that claim should be treated with a degree of skepticism.

The video points out that the most likely reason for a larger coil would be to compensate for the more powerful MagSafe magnet or to better deal with thermal management and higher wattage. However, he also mentions another possibility: reverse wireless charging.

Reverse wireless charging is exactly what it sounds like, a feature that first entered the Android mainstream with Samsung's Galaxy S10. When enabled, the back of the phone becomes a wireless charging pad, allowing you to charge another compatible device at the slightest sacrifice of the phone's battery. Since the battery of the device you want to charge is usually much smaller (think true wireless earbuds or smartwatch), you won't lose much of your phone's precious power in the process.

For Apple, this is certainly an attractive feature and could provide an additional way to charge both AirPods and the Apple Watch (the latter of which, thanks to the introduction of sleep tracking in watchOS 7, is putting ever more strain on its limited battery) Potential.

We know Apple is thinking along these lines. In fact, a patent published last year revealed that the iPhone 12 may already incorporate reverse wireless charging. Given the significant power drain such a feature would require and the weak battery power of the iPhone 12 series devices, it would probably be a smart move.

However, we believe the upgraded battery will make an appearance in iPhone 13.

However, we need to underline "may" here, as even Weinbach seems unsure on this point. At the part of the video where wireless charging coils are discussed (2 minutes in if you want to see for yourself), there is a part quoted directly at the bottom of the screen: "There is also the possibility of reverse wireless charging, but it has not been confirmed to that extent."

It is also worth noting that another leading source, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, claimed in February that reverse direction wireless charging was "unlikely in the near future."

Perhaps it will be clearer in September, when Tim Cook officially unveils the iPhone 13. Unless, for superstitious reasons, it is the iPhone 12s.
