Alleged Motorola Edge 2 leak says four phones are on the way

Motorola has introduced a number of budget smartphones in 2021, but so far has neglected the high end of the market. According to one tipster source with a very strong track record for getting things right, that is about to change with the Motorola Edge 2.

According to leaker Evan Blass, Motorola plans to follow up last year's Motorola Edge with no less than four models, code-named Pstar, Kyoto, Berlin, and a U.S.-bound model of Berlin.

The U.S. market version of the Berlin will apparently be exclusive to Verizon, which is not surprising given that last year's Motorola Edge Plus was Verizon-only, with a 120Hz 2,460 x 1,080 display and a 108 MP main sensor and a triple-camera array around the main sensor, which is said to be a 6.78-inch device. It is said to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 778G SoC, with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage.

Battery capacity is listed at 5,000mAh, the main difference from the global Berlin device, which has a 4,000mAh cell and a slightly smaller 6.67" 2,400 x 1,080 screen. This version also includes a 3x optical zoom on the camera array, while the U.S. version has a 2MP macro lens instead.

The most highly specced model is the Pstar model. This model reportedly has the superior Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor, 6GB, 8GB, or 12GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The triple camera will likely include a 108MP main lens, a secondary 16MP sensor for wide-angle and macro photography, and an 8MP 5x zoom telephoto lens; according to Blass, this is also a 6.67-inch device with the same Berlin 2,400 x 1,080 120Hz panel.

Finally, there is the cheapest model: the Kyoto. Its size is unknown, but it has the same 2,400 x 1,080 resolution, but at 90 Hz instead of 120 Hz. Qualcomm will replace MediaTek with the Dimensity 720 chipset, with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, according to Blass; the triple camera, led by a 108MP main lens, appears to be still in place, but there is no telephoto zoom. The entire device is powered by a large 5,000mAh battery.

Blass has not revealed a release date, but it is worth noting that the original Motorola Edge device was released over a year ago, in May 2020. Overall, the mid-range specs will largely depend on the final price, but we hope the device will be attractive enough to make our "best phones you can afford" list.
