Instagram is testing the desktop posting feature — it's about time

Ask anyone what the biggest problem with Instagram is and they are likely to bring up the fact that you can only post from the app and not from a web browser. But that may change in the near future.

Social media consultant Matt Navarra was the first to discover that you can now create Instagram posts from a web browser and published a screenshot of it on Twitter. Facebook later confirmed to Bloomberg that the feature is currently being tested.

"We know a lot of people are accessing Instagram from their computers," Facebook spokeswoman Christine Pai told Bloomberg. 'To improve that experience, we're currently testing the ability to create Instagram feed posts in a desktop browser.'

Frankly, it's shocking that it took Instagram this long to reach this stage. Initially, the service was built to upload photos as you go about your day, but over the past 11 years it has become so much more than that.

There are a huge number of Instagram influencers in the world, most of whom have to edit and produce their posts before they are published. Doing that on a smartphone is much more difficult than using a desktop machine. That's why third-party tools have stepped in to fill in the gaps in Instagram's functionality.

The screenshots of the tools released by Navarra will give you an idea of what official Instagram desktop publishing will look like. Currently included in the test is the ability to drag and drop files into the upload box, select aspect ratios, choose filters (naturally), and a number of sliding tools to change brightness, contrast, etc.

It is unclear how widespread the Instagram test is and what kind of timeline we will see for it to roll out to all. Sadly, none of the Tom's Guide staff has access to the desktop publishing tools, so they cannot test it themselves.

If you are an active Instagram user and wish you could post from your desktop machine, we urge you to check out the Instagram website. Look for the big Plus sign in the upper right corner of your screen, between the Inbox and 'Explore' buttons.
