iPhone14 Rumors I am worried about iPhone13 — Here's why

This week, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a note stating that Apple has some big plans for the 2022 iPhone. One is that Apple expects to offer two 6.1-inch iPhone 14 models and two 6.7-inch models. That's right, no more mini's.

Furthermore, the regular 6.7-inch iPhone 14 may be priced below $900. That is certainly cheaper than the $1,100 iPhone 12 Pro Max. But he mentions something else that worries him about the prospect of a phone that will appear earlier than the iPhone 14 in 2022, namely this year's iPhone 13 model.

According to Kuo, the 2022 iPhone lineup will feature Touch ID under the screen. That would be great, but we had previously seen rumors that this feature might be included in this year's iPhone 13 lineup. What do you think will happen?

The following is Kuo's accurate analyst note, obtained by 9to5Mac:

"We have been working on our previous key specification predictions for the 2H22 iPhone models, namely that Apple will offer two high-end iPhones (6.1″ and 6.7″) and two low-end iPhones (6.1″ and 6.7″) in 2H22, repeating our prediction that Apple will release two high-end iPhones (6.1″ and 6.7″) in 2H22.

We believe the growth drivers for the new iPhones in 2H22 are 1) possible under-display fingerprint support (using Apple's proprietary technology), 2) the lowest price ever for a large (6.7″) iPhone (we expect it to be under US$900), 3) We believe it will come from a broad camera upgrade to 48MP on the high-end models.

Although the mask requirement has been lifted in most places in the US, from bars and stores to restaurants, face masks are still required on public transportation, airplanes, and airports. I will be returning to business (and hopefully travel) soon, and it is annoying to be forced to enter my passcode every time I unlock my cell phone.

Yes, there is a workaround for iPhone unlocking: if you have an Apple Watch, you can unlock your iPhone without a facemask. But that is not feasible for many.

Now let's talk about timing. If Kuo's prediction is accurate and we have to wait until 2022 for Touch ID under the display, that's lousy. Samsung included an under-display fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S10 in 2019. That scanner was hit or miss, but the technology has steadily improved and now works very well on phones like the Galaxy S21.

It is hard to believe that it will take until 2022 for Apple to make Touch ID work the way they want it to on the iPhone.

In the meantime, I hope that at least the iPhone 13 will have Touch ID embedded in the power button like the iPad Air 4. It's more inconvenient than just tapping the screen, but better than having to enter a passcode every time you want to use the phone and Face ID is not an option.

The iPhone 13 should have many other upgrades based on various reports, including a smaller notch, faster processor, enhanced camera and better 5G. And I for one am really looking forward to the 120Hz display on the Pro model. But this is one iPhone rumor that I don't want to see come to fruition.
