SpaceX CEO says Starlink Internet will be global by 9 May

For the 1,000 to 5,000 seasonal workers in Antarctica, Netflix streaming is about to get better thanks to Starlink.

SpaceX CEO Gwynne Shotwel announced that Starlink expects to have worldwide coverage by September.

According to Reuters, Shotwel said, "We have successfully deployed 1,800 or so satellites, and once they all reach operational orbit, we will have continuous global coverage.

Still, Starlink has other challenges besides launching satellites into space.

"There is the regulatory work to go to every country and get authorization to provide telecommunications services," Shotwell said. [At the moment, Starlink's goal is to launch 12,000 satellites into orbit. At the current pace, SpaceX expects to reach that goal by 2030. But that is only the first part of Elon Musk's satellite mega-constellation plan. Ultimately, SpaceX hopes to have 42,000 low earth orbit (LEO) satellites in orbit, a goal that will take decades to achieve.

Currently, Starlink operates in 11 countries and above certain latitudes. But as more satellites enter orbit, the load and range that the network can handle will increase; even if Starlink is able to cover the entire world by September, it will probably not have the consistency that cable Internet users are accustomed to. But for people in rural parts of the world, having access to high-quality Internet some days of the day is better than dealing with poor dial-up or DSL.
