Prime Day 2021: How to Prevent Package Theft

With Prime Day just around the corner, packages are likely to be delivered to homes in the near future. But with the increase in deliveries from Amazon and other retailers, package theft is on the rise; according to a C+R Research survey of 2,000 individuals, package theft rose from 36% to 43% last year, with an average value of $136.

Fortunately, there are several ways to help deter theft, including improved lighting and scheduling. Here are six tips to help keep porch and luggage thieves from stealing your goods.

While it is true that luggage theft is more common during the day, there is no harm in keeping your front door well-lit to deter porch thieves during the night hours. Plus, it's good to have plenty of lighting so visitors can see where they are walking. See our best selection of solar lights. There is also the Ring Spotlight Cam Solar ($229), which has a light and camera and runs on batteries.

If you can make it difficult for someone on the sidewalk to look at your front door to see if you have a package, they are less likely to approach to see if there is anything worth stealing. Something like a delivery box would also be helpful, although it may be difficult depending on the size of the porch. This Cosco delivery box ($76) has 6.3 cubic feet (31 x 19.5 x 18 inches) of space and comes in several color options.

If you work outside of your home, schedule deliveries at times when you know you will be home. That way, your package will sit by your front door all day and not be stolen by someone; one option is to use a service called Amazon Day. Amazon says this also reduces the number of boxes. To take advantage of this service, which is free for Prime members, visit Amazon Day.

If you know when your package is expected to arrive, you can make sure that you or a neighbor can pick it up." It may seem very basic, but if you know what day and possibly when your package will be delivered, you can plan to either stay home or have a friend or neighbor pick up your package to avoid theft," said Abode CEO and co-founder Chris Carney says.

Instead of having packages delivered to your home, you can have them sent to an Amazon hub locker or counter and pick them up at your convenience. The service is free, but has some restrictions: items delivered to Amazon Hub lockers must weigh less than 10 pounds, measure less than 16 x 12 x 14 inches, and cost less than $5,000. Amazon Hub Counter items must weigh up to 33 pounds and be up to 36 x 24 x 24 inches in size For more information on Amazon Hub Lockers and Counter locations, visit Amazon's Hub Locker website.

The video doorbell acts as a deterrent by notifying you when someone approaches your front door. Also, if someone steals a package, you can record a video of it; good video doorbells, such as the Nest Hello and Arlo Video Doorbell, have package detection, letting you know that a delivery person has dropped off a package. That way, they can be quickly picked up from the front door. Later this fall, package detection will be added to all security cameras that use Apple's HomeKit Secure Cloud Storage.
