Free guy release date, ratings, possible streaming options, posters, etc.

Gamers know better. Guy, played by Ryan Reynolds, will learn that lesson in this late summer blockbuster. Reynolds plays a banker in the film who slowly realizes that he lives in a chaotic video game backdrop.

Buddy is the so-called "nice guy. He's not the kind of protagonist you'd expect to see in a "Grand Theft Auto" game, which is why he's unlikely to be the perfect action hero. In gamer terms, he is a non-playable character (NPC), meaning he never actually acts. He merely observes the mass car murders, explosions, and shootings. But until he gets his magic glasses, all the previously unseen elements of gameplay are unleashed.

"Free Guy" will be released on August 13, 2021. It was previously scheduled to be released in July 2020, but then the Covid-19 pandemic broke out; the December 2020 and May 2021 release dates also failed.

Trial and error is underway to see where it can be viewed online. Speculation on when and where it will be released is summarized below.

Somehow, this movie is all about video games filled with gun battles, chaos and violence. We are as shocked as you are, but I guess that means we should lower our expectations for how risqué this film will be.

The latest "Free Guy" trailer shows that Millie, aka Molotov Girl, actually gives her gamer powers to the guys. The brains of the game are furious at Guy's sycophantic way of life and want to take him out for it. There's also a bit of a platform-jumping element, making us glad that he's not the kind of person who jumps off tall buildings in one fell swoop.

The main "Free Guy" trailer begins by mocking Disney's habit of re-releasing animated films as live-action movies, then drops us into Guy's organized chaos, "Fortnite" style.

This is not a clear-cut situation, but there is no doubt that "Free Guy" will be available on Hulu or even Disney Plus. First, there will be a 45-day theatrical exclusivity before moving to Premium on Demand or other streaming options.

However, since the film is a 20th Century Studios production and has a PG-13 rating, it will most likely go to Hulu, Disney's streaming arm with more mature content. Indeed, the PG-13 rating is the same rating as "The Avengers: Endgame" (available on Disney Plus), but something about the film speaks volumes about Hulu.

As for when. That is unknown. But it is certain to be before Monday, September 27, 2021. That's when the theatrical exclusives mentioned above will end.

In the words of SNL's Steffon, the Free Guy poster has it all. Fireworks (or missiles) launched from a fighter jet into a helicopter. Check. Taika Waititi in a cheeky pose. Check. A policeman in a bunny suit. Check. A hero in a jetpack casually flying over a person with a gun in each hand and an activated parachute. Check.

And not only do Reynolds and Comer appear, but a tiny version of both stars ride motorcycles.

"Free Guy" has the wildest and longest cast aside from "The Avengers": as wild and long as "Endgame. The main cast alone makes this movie a joy to watch. Ryan Reynolds plays the main character, Guy, and Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve") co-stars as Millie, the Molotov cocktail girl who is the badass that Guy is not. Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out," "Bird Box") plays Guy's best friend, cop Buddy.

The film's main antagonist appears to be the immature Antoine, played by Taika Waititi. Yes, the mad genius who starred in and directed "Kagemusha" and directed and voiced "Thor: Ragnarok" is content to just charm us on screen. Next to Waititi is Joe Keely ("Stranger Things") as Keys, who seems to be Antoine's lackey.

The 20th Century Studios website lists Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Tina Fey, and John Krasinski (who appears in the latest trailer). The late Alex Trebek will also appear as himself, as will game streamer Ninja.
