The price of AppleCare Plus has just fallen for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air - is the extra warranty worth it now?

Good news if you're thinking about buying a new MacBook: Apple has reduced the price of its AppleCare Plus extended warranty service for current model MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

The price change applies to MacBook Air with Apple's M1 chip, Intel-based MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 As MacRumors discovered, MacBook Air models AppleCare Plus price has dropped from $249 to $199; the Apple Care Plus package for the MacBook Pro has been reduced from $269 to $249. Meanwhile, AppleCare Plus for the Intel-based 13-inch MacBook Pro model remains at $269.

It is unclear why Apple made this change, and the amount of coverage has not changed with the price reduction. Similar price drops were seen in other regions.

Each AppleCare Plus plan for MacBooks extends the warranty period to three years (standard is one year) and significantly lowers the cost of repairing accidental damage to the notebook. subscribers to the AppleCare Plus plan will have two accidental damage repairs within 12 months and 24/7 live technical support is also available.

AppleCare Plus for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro can be purchased with either laptop or within 60 days of purchasing the hardware; according to MacRumors, those who have recently purchases can contact Apple Support to cancel their existing plan and sign up for a lower price.

Given the AppleCare Plus coverage, AppleCare Plus is a considerable safety net for users who are concerned about the longevity of their new MacBooks or who are accident-prone. However, even at the discounted price, you will pay at least 20% of the price of your new laptop to secure the extended warranty and coverage.

As a heavy, long-time MacBook user, I have never personally felt the need to pay for AppleCare Plus on a laptop. Apple devices are usually well made, sturdy, and last for several years. If a widespread manufacturing problem rears its head, as evidenced by keyboard issues with previous generation models or various battery failures over the years, Apple will launch a service program offering free repair or replacement.

Still, for some people, it is worth paying extra for peace of mind. Especially if the laptop in question starts at $999 and scales up significantly depending on the specs chosen; with Apple Care Plus, technical support is also available 24 hours a day.

The AppleCare price cuts are quite modest overall, but may be enough to sway prospective buyers.
