Today is the big delivery event day for the Tesla Model S Plaid, meaning that brand new Tesla sedans will be hitting the road any day now. Unfortunately, the day also coincides with a significant price increase.

Until today, you could pre-order a Model S Plaid for $119,990, but starting today it will cost $129,990, a price increase of exactly $10,000.

This news comes on the back of several price hikes by Tesla. In recent months, Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y have undergone various price increases, with both vehicles now about $2,000 more expensive than they were in March. According to CEO Elon Musk, these price increases are due to cost pressure from the supply chain.

Meanwhile, Tesla's "fully automated" (not actually fully driverless) Autopilot add-on has increased in price since this time last year. Originally priced at $7,000, the price went up to $8,000 in July and then to $10,000 in December. According to Musk, the price will continue to rise as the add-on approaches "fully automated functionality with regulatory approval."

It is not clear why the Model S Plaid's price was raised or why the price increase was so drastic. Perhaps the price increase is related to the cancellation of the $149,900 Tesla Model S Plaid Plus.

The fact that the price change occurred on the same day as the car's "delivery event" is hardly a coincidence. The previous pricing was likely set low in an attempt to draw in pre-orders, and this new price is more reflective of the car's originally planned price.

Alternatively, Tesla may have seen a lot of demand for the Plaid, especially after it stopped taking orders for the Plaid Plus. By raising the price, some potential buyers may hold off on ordering. This would make it difficult for Tesla to fulfill the huge number of orders and would not delay the delivery of the cars. This is because such a situation has happened before.
