iOS 15 just brought back a magnifying glass for selecting text

Apple's iOS 15 beta brings back the magnifying glass for magnifying text, a feature not seen since iOS 12.

Despite being a popular feature that helped users pinpoint text and align the cursor more precisely, Apple removed the feature when it debuted iOS 13 in 2019. However, the magnifying glass is back and is officially named on Apple's iOS 15 webpage.

With the exception of dropping the butterfly keyboard on the MacBook series and reverting to a scissor key mechanism, it is rare for Apple to withdraw a change. Nevertheless, the magnification tool is still not currently available to regular iPhone users.

For now, only developers can get their hands on the tool; here's how to download the iOS 15 developer beta. Now, as you begin to move the text cursor, a familiar bubble pops up over your finger, magnifying what you see on the screen below.

In the first iteration of iOS 15, the magnifying glass is shaped like a small capsule and appears noticeably smaller than in previous versions; as The Verge noted=s, if you don=t remember how the magnifying loupe looked in iOS 13 - and how useful it was - if you don't remember, here's a demo of it in action.

If you are someone who owns one of the models on our list of best iPhones, you have probably encountered situations where you want to select text but your finger obscures certain letters or segments.

This can be fiddly and is an example of a text selection bug that first entered the fray in iOS 13 and remained a problem in iOS 14.

We will let you know when this tool will be fully available as we approach the public beta iOS 15 release in July. The final release is expected this fall.
