Fourth stimulus check: Biden is "open to a range of ideas"

Although a fourth stimulus package has not yet been formally proposed, the White House again commented on the possibility of a new bailout package.

At a press conference on Thursday (June 3), White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, when asked about lawmakers asking President Biden for more stimulus checks, said, "The president is certainly open to different ideas."

"The president is willing to hear a range of ideas about what will work best and what is most important for the economy going forward," spokeswoman Psaki said.

While Psaki's latest comments are encouraging, he reiterated that the White House, or President Joe Biden's administration, will not draft a bill that includes a fourth stimulus package, as they did with the third stimulus package, passed in March. Biden President's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan included $1,400 that is still being provided.

Instead, the White House has said that support for another or regular round of direct payments must come from Congress.

"We'll see what members of Congress propose, but it's not free," Psaki said at a May press conference.

Interest in a fourth stimulus check or additional stimulus relief still has support in Congress. Last month, seven Democrats on the House Economic Affairs Committee sent a letter to President Biden urging him to add up to $2,000 worth of stimulus to the American Families Plan on a regular basis.

The lawmakers wrote, "We urge you to prioritize both automatic [unemployment insurance] extensions and regular direct payments tied to economic conditions." [The pandemic was a painful reminder that families and workers need certainty in a crisis. They deserve to know that they can put food on the table and maintain a roof over their heads. They should not be at the mercy of ever-shifting legislative schedules and ad hoc solutions.

The letter echoes the calls of Democrats in both the House and Senate for additional stimulus, whether temporary or ongoing. Earlier this year, more than 50 House members sent a letter to the White House and 21 Senate Democrats sent another.

Since the pandemic began, eligible Americans have received three stimulus checks. The first, provided by the CARES Act passed in March 2020, is worth up to $1,200 per person; the second, a check for $600, will arrive in bank accounts at the end of 2020; and the third, for up to $1,400 per person, is part of Biden's American Recovery Plan and is still being paid in increments as last year's tax returns are processed.
