Your Tesla can spy on you for your insurance company one day

While Tesla fans praise Elon Musk for turning electric cars into high-tech toys, some of these telemetry metrics may bounce back to drivers' insurance premiums.

Automakers are currently working on ways to integrate Autopilot usage and other driving habits into insurance programs.

Tesla is operating its own insurance in California starting in 2019, promising to offer premiums that are up to 30% lower than competing providers. The company claims that having access to more data about how cars are used means it can offer better insurance products to customers.

And thanks to reverse engineering of the Tesla app (via Redditor u/Callump01), we can see what Tesla is thinking. Obviously, the Tesla app will include a new "safety rating" page that tracks your car and links to your insurance. This is essentially like a black box that can track your car and communicate with your insurance company.

In this example, however, it is not just the driver's speed that Tesla monitors. Data mining shows how often the car forcibly disengages Autopilot because the driver ignored warnings, the duration of the trip, ABS activation, forward collision warnings, dangerous following times, and even the intensity of acceleration and braking

. Tesla also has a pass/fail rating system, but Callump01 mentions that it is not clear if users can actually see this.

But of course, these statistics are used to change insurance premiums by up to 50% on a monthly basis. In other words, your driving style could end up costing you more because your car was tipping off your personal habits. More likely, however, if you drive safely and carefully, your insurance premiums will go down.

Apparently, the app will include a simulator mode that shows how various factors affect insurance premiums. This will at least give people the opportunity to change their habits before the possibility of a price increase remains.

According to Callump01, these features are still in the early stages of development, but they could be an indicator of what drivers may face in the future. As cars become more connected and high-tech, more data can be collected and transmitted. Once insurers have all of that, they will be able to offer very personalized insurance plans.

Of course, the current auto insurance industry will completely change once the future of automated driving is realized.
