Samsung Galaxy S22 may not get the view camera below — here's why

Contrary to previous rumors, Samsung's Galaxy S22 may not feature a selfie camera under the display due to manufacturing challenges.

This is according to a recent post on Korean technology leak site Naver, which claims that production yields and equipment testing will not be ready in time to produce enough units of the Galaxy S22. However, there are still reports that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have an under-display camera.

Naver also claims that the image quality does not meet Samsung's standards for the Galaxy S22 because the camera is quite visible below the screen.

However, the claim that Samsung may be holding off on including an under-display camera on the Galaxy S22 should not come as a big surprise if the leak is legitimate; the ZTE Axon 20 5G does have such a camera, but it is below the screen because it is visible and the image quality is not very good. [However, not all hope is lost for Samsung phones with under-display cameras coming this year, as Naver claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have such a camera. [Producing enough under-display camera units for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be easier than for the Galaxy S22. Furthermore, the Z Fold 3 is expected to have a secondary selfie camera, so there should be less concern about image quality.

As for other phones, however, Naver reports that Samsung will take its time perfecting the camera under the display so that it is not visible and the photo quality is up to standard. As a result, it is likely that we will not see the finished product until late 2022. The Galaxy S22 is expected to be released in early 2022, so it will appear before this claimed camera optimization is done.

Of course, nothing has been confirmed at this stage. However, leakers like Ice Universe seem to agree that Samsung has not yet perfected the under-display camera, with images showing that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a visible lens positioned below the screen.

Another rumor of Samsung's Galaxy S22 suggested that the chipset would feature AMD's graphics technology, suggesting the possibility of impressive gaming.
