Grey's Anatomy Finale explained: Who broke up, got engaged and married?

The season 17 finale of "Grey's Anatomy" featured two weddings and one funeral, an emotional finale as three couples reached major turning points in their relationships. But who got married, who got engaged, and who broke up? Major spoilers for the "Grey's Anatomy" finale follow.

In non-romance news, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) battled COVID-19 all season and successfully returned to surgery after suffering lingering symptoms during her initial trip to the operating room. However, she continued to fight for her patient, COVID survivor Garry, who eventually underwent a double lung transplant. She was applauded by the hospital staff for her efforts.

In the season 17 finale of "Grey's Anatomy," the show was fast-forwarded from August 2020 to April 2021, so the show has almost caught up to the present day.

Here is an overview of what happened in the finale, "Someone Saved My Life."

In August 2020, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Winston (Anthony Hill) were having a small wedding in Meredith's backyard. But Maggie's father and Winston's grandmother object, not because they think they shouldn't be together, but because they should have a real big wedding with all their family and friends in attendance.

Maggie and Winston are at first a little stunned by the objection, but soon realize the good their relatives are saying. Maggie drinks champagne and Mel's children happily go for cake.

Fast forward to April 2021, and Maggie and Winston have their second real wedding on the beach. And it was just as big and beautiful as their loved ones had hoped. The hospital staff had already been vaccinated, and since the event was outdoors, the risk of COVID was very low.

Maggie walked down the aisle in her father's arms as her own father, Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), officiated. They say their vows and jump over brooms, a black wedding tradition.

Then everyone starts dancing.

It is Christmas 2020, and Meredith is enjoying opening presents with her children, sisters, and friends. Link (Chris Carmack) intends to propose to Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), but his big day is interrupted when everyone notices that it is snowing outside, but only in the backyard.

It turns out that Owen (Kevin McKidd) has installed a snow machine for Teddy (Kim Raver), who loves the snow. He then gets down on one knee - Link sighs in frustration, "Come on," he says - and asks Teddy to marry him. She tearfully says yes. After years of ups and downs, they may finally have their eternal happiness.

For months, Amelia has been struggling with the future with her baby's father, Link. She confesses to the addiction group that she does not want to get married or have any more children with him.

Meanwhile, Link is planning to propose, buying four different rings and showing them to his best friend Joe (Camilla Luddington). His first chance was derailed by Owen's Christmas proposal. So he takes advantage of the romantic setting of Maggie's wedding to execute his second chance.

He also enlists the help of Meredith's children. When Amelia meets them on the beach, he and all three children offer her one ring each. He gets down on one knee and asks Amelia to marry him. But her expression is full of answers. It's a no.

Besides the couple's drama, a lot happens in the finale. Jo decides to do whatever it takes to gain custody of little Luna. First, she asks Link for help--he becomes Luna's official foster parent as a cover, and Joe actually takes care of Luna. Then, she realizes that she is wealthy because of the stock that Alex left at the hospital. She eventually sells that stock to Tom Kolasik (Greg Germann) and hires a good custody lawyer.

Later, Jo uses the rest of the money to buy Jackson's (Jesse Williams) apartment and settles down with Luna. When Amelia declines the link, he heads that way to find a place to sleep.

The big medical case of the finale revolves around Garry, an assisted living nurse who has recovered from COVID-19 but has ongoing lung problems. Meredith tries to perform a double lung transplant, but Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is opposed. She thinks Meredith should focus on her new job teaching interns. Meredith, however, insists that she was brought in to "change things."

However, during Ma's first surgical procedure on Garry, she feels dizzy and weak. She, too, felt the aftereffects of COVID. A few months later, however, on Maggie's wedding day, Ma is informed that Garry has a compatible lung. She and Teddy rush to the hospital, where the surgery is performed.

Meredith is all better and emerges from the operating room to loud applause, with Bailey in the lead. Meredith Gray returns.
