OLED iPads could be coming next Year - here's why

Apple reportedly plans to use OLED displays on "some" iPads starting next year. This is not the first time we have heard reports that Apple will upgrade the displays on its popular tablet series in 2022.

This latest information comes from Korea's ETNews (via 9to5Mac). The publication claims: "Apple has decided to use OLED instead of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) starting with some iPad models in 2022. Apple and display companies have reportedly agreed on production and delivery."

These tablets would not even be Apple's first products to offer OLED panels; one of the iPhone12's biggest selling points is the inclusion of OLED display technology, and it makes a lot of sense that the company would roll out this feature in more products in the future

The company is also looking to expand into the next generation of products.

OLED displays for the current generation of iPhones are supplied by Samsung and LG, and it appears that these companies have already reached an agreement to produce displays for future iPads. This suggests that 2022 is the first year we can expect to see an iPad with an OLED screen.

This latest report ties in nicely with claims by reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that next year's version of the iPad Air will feature an OLED display. This is despite the fact that Apple just used a Liquid Retina XDR (Mini-LED) display in the iPad Pro 2021, which was released just last month.

Mini-LED displays offer many of the same benefits as OLED screens, such as deeper blacks and richer colors, plus they do not suffer from burn-in. However, when it comes to pixel-level contrast, OLEDs have the advantage. OLEDs used to be more expensive, but the price of OLED panels has dropped significantly in recent years.

Some Apple analysts, including ETNews analysts, suggest that Apple's use of Mini-LED in the latest iPad Pro was a temporary band-aid, and that this latest rumor indicates that in the long run Apple's tablets will again offer OLED displays suggesting that the company will be able to offer an OLED display in the future.

Of course, Apple could take the best approach for both parties and continue to offer Mini-LED displays on the iPad Pro series while using OLED on the iPad Air series. However, due to logistical and pricing issues, it would be much easier for Apple to opt for a unified display option.
