The trailer for the new Loki TV series promises to deliver something Marvel has never done before

New behind-the-scenes footage of the "Loki" TV series has arrived, raising expectations for the Disney Plus series. While most of the trailer is pretty standard fare, there is a line in the video that gives us hope that Loki will be a show that will shatter the fatigue of Marvel movies and shows.

With so much going on in the MCU right now, our ears perked up when Tom Hiddleston (Loki, of course) says in the trailer, "This is something Marvel has never done before." Owen Wilson (Mobius) also said, "This is completely different from anything we've done before," and with these two lines, we have high hopes for the Loki series.

Katie Herron, director and executive producer of the Loki series, said the show has "a really big story and a mix of different tones and genres."

And while the clip offers some behind-the-scenes glimpses, including a moment when Hiddleston and Wilson are laughing on set, most of it is cast members promoting the show. Hiddleston remarks that "the audience will be really excited" and "awe-inspiring," but not enough to make one expect anything new.

Then Hiddleston says, "What did you expect?"

and the clip ends. It is the kind of moment that is both a wink and a nod to the audience. We are told to expect something new, but we also know that this is a Marvel project. How much room is given to Hiddleston and his associates to create something new and unique?

We are already seeing why it fits into the larger MCU storyline, along with signs that this will be the first MCU project to debut the villain Kang the Conqueror (who will appear in "Ant-Man 3"). We're ready for Hiddleston et al. to surprise us in unexpected ways, but if Loki doesn't have connections to other Marvel productions, it will really stand out.

Also, the Loki series is only six episodes long, so it is more likely to be a split movie than "Wander Vision" or "Falcon & Winter Soldier."

One thing to note about the Loki show is that we already know that this is not exactly the true Loki. The true Loki was killed at the hands of Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War and was not resurrected in Avengers/Endgame: Endgame. This Loki is a variant (the words on his jumper) that came into the world from the time-hopping chaos experienced by the character, including when he acquired the Tesseract in "Endgame."

In other words, Loki in the upcoming series may have identity issues. However, he is a more canonical Loki than the vision we saw in "Wander Vision," nor was he killed and kidnapped by Thanos.

Loki debuts next week, Wednesday, June 9, only on Disney Plus. Episodes will be released on subsequent Wednesdays.
