Google is reportedly working on a foldable phone that could be released as early as this fall. But whenever the Pixel Fold does appear, it should feature a foldable display from a familiar source.

ETNews reports that Samsung plans to supply folding screens for Google's upcoming Pixel Fold. Samsung certainly has experience in the foldable field, as it currently produces two foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip.

More good news for Google: in addition to providing a foldable display for the Pixel Fold, Samsung will also provide a layer of ultra-thin glass. This is the bendable glass that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Z Flip, making the foldable phone sturdier and sleeker.

The inclusion of a layer of ultra-thin glass on the Pixel Fold will make Google's phone feel more durable. At the time, this was disproportionate to the $2,000 Samsung was charging. Later models with ultra-thin glass felt like the premium devices that Samsung was marketing as foldable phones.

Samsung has a thriving display business and will also supply the fast refresh screen used in Apple's iPhone 13 Pro model to be released this fall, and ETNews' report suggests that the Korean electronics giant is eager to expand its folding display business According to Android Authority, in addition to Google, Oppo and Vivo are also potential customers for foldable screens.

The Pixel Fold is expected to reveal a larger display inside when folded, but details remain very sketchy at this point. The phone could appear at the same time as the Pixel 6, which is expected to be released in the fall.

Samsung is developing several foldable phones of its own: the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, which improve on the performance and features of Samsung's most successful foldable phones, are expected to be released later this year.
