Rolls-Royce confirms its first EV - We know about Silent Shadow

While Mercedes EQS aims to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid in luxury, the German automaker is aiming to beat the new Rolls-Royce Silent Shadow

The British luxury The brand announced (via Bloomberg) an EV currently in the works. Using the Phantom as its platform, Rolls-Royce has chosen to name its first EV after one of the benefits of electrification: silence.

While there is no word on when the car will make its debut, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Etvos has acknowledged that it will. 'Electrification is a perfect fit for Rolls-Royce. We are not known for making rasping engine and exhaust noises."

This is no doubt where the name Silent Shadow comes from. Rolls-Royce is well known for giving its cars spectacular names, such as Phantom, Ghost, and Wraith. And given how quiet electric car engines are compared to internal combustion engines, and given that we already have the Silver Shadow, calling the electric car model the Silent Shadow is a genius naming choice.

However, according to an old InsideEVs report, the Silent Shadow is not a direct electrification of the Silver Shadow. Instead, it is expected to be its own model based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom platform, developed along with the BMW i7.

While some luxury car owners will enjoy the roar of a powerful engine that they will miss after transitioning to an electric car, Rolls-Royce owners apparently will not. Rolls-Royce cars are already known for being quiet beasts, and eliminating the internal combustion engine will only accentuate that. Rolls-Royce has previously confirmed that it will skip hybrids and jump straight from gas-powered vehicles to all-electric models.

Unfortunately, that's all we know about the Silent Shadow. Still, it would be an overkill exercise for Rolls-Royce. The company doesn't do things by halves, so whatever the Silent Shadow will be, it will be one of the most luxurious electric cars money can buy. Given that the cheapest Rolls-Royce starts at $311,000, the Silent Shadow will probably be the most expensive EV ever.

Rolls-Royce cars are also not known for being thin and light machines. The Silent Shadow will likely weigh in excess of 6,000 pounds and will require a large battery pack to ensure adequate fuel economy. This is because it makes no sense for a luxury EV to go only 50 miles and require several hours of recharging.
