How to Download Spotify Playlists to Apple Watch

You might be forgiven for thinking that Spotify already allows you to download music to your Apple Watch, but the feature was actually only recently introduced. The much-requested feature is useful for those who want to go for a run without waving their phone around in their pocket.

Surprisingly, this feature is limited to Spotify Premium subscribers, which is why offline listening support was a major factor in our evaluation in the Spotify Free vs Premium article. Fortunately, everyone can already control their Spotify playlists from their Watch, and while that will not change, the ability to download music and podcasts directly from Spotify is new.

First, you need to find the music you want to download. For example, it may be easiest to create a playlist called "Watch" for the music. Press the three dots at the top of the screen, select "Download to Apple Watch," and you can download any playlist, album, or podcast.

Once the song has been loaded to the Watch, a green arrow will appear next to the song or podcast. You can also check the download progress in the "Downloads" section of the Watch app. Although we have not been able to confirm this yet, presumably switching song selections is handled in the same way because of the limited capacity of the Apple Watch.

This feature will work on Series 3 and later Apple Watches. At least WatchOS 6 is required. It is also important that the app version is up-to-date. In our experience, it is a good idea to check the app store, as the apps may not be automatically updated in time.

Spotify also says it will roll out this feature to subscribers "over the next few weeks," so you may have to wait a bit for it to appear if you don't already have it. Until then, you can always pull out your Sony Walkman and pop in a cassette tape of Green Day's "Dookie."
