Acer's giant 17-inch Chromebook is a great idea — here's why

Acer's Chromebook 317 is the first Chromebook to be released in the United States, and the first Chromebook to be released in the United States in the fall of 2012.

A look at the selection of the best Chromebooks shows that most have more compact displays, usually in the 13-inch range. But Acer is targeting the Chromebook 317 at people who want a laptop with a larger display for working at home, not to mention choosing a powerful Windows 10 machine or a MacBook Pro 16-inch. [We are not saying that the Chromebook 317 is underpowered, as it has an Intel 11th generation Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and 265GB of storage. It's more than adequate for general computing and more than enough to run a touchscreen 1920 x 1080 display.

The latest Intel processors also provide access to Wi-Fi 6, a useful addition if you have a compatible router.

There are two USB 3.2 ports, and the Type-C connector can be used for display output, fast charging, and high-speed data. The two USB Type-A connections can also be used to handle legacy peripherals like a mouse and keyboard. There is also a nifty microSD card slot. [The Acer Chromebook 317 will be available in the US in June starting at $397 and £349 in the UK. We need to take a closer look at this expandable Chromebook, but the high price tag for a machine with a 17-inch display is tempting.

It's easy to be puzzled by such a large Chromebook, but there are plenty of use cases where it makes sense. Those who need a home computer of some sort, but don't need anything particularly sophisticated, will probably enjoy such a large display that can be easily put away when not in use.

And then there is accessibility. Many people do not have perfect eyesight, so a large screen makes a lot of sense for them. There is no need for a separate monitor, and it is also ideal for grandparents to keep in touch with their children and grandchildren via e-mail and video calls. A wide-angle webcam is also included. Plus, if you want to experiment a bit with streaming, that's an option as well.

Chromebooks are ideal for many people who want a computer with an operating system that is rather simple and hassle-free compared to Window 10 macOS.

Chromebooks are long-supported, incredibly easy to use, and have a simple reset to factory settings in minutes. Because most of your files and data are stored in the cloud, Chromebooks generally provide a worry-free computer.

Thus, Acer may be on to something with its first 17-inch Chromebook offering.
