Nissan is letting you lease a leaf electric car for 99 cents — really

Burger King is currently running a $1 offer for a Whopper, and a Nissan dealership in Springfield, Virginia, is not to be outdone and is running a similar offer on Titan pickup trucks and Leaf EVs. Hart Nissan in Springfield, Virginia, is allowing Titan and Titan XD buyers to choose and lease a LEAF for less than $1.

The deal allows buyers to choose either a Titan or a Titan XD and then lease the LEAF EV of their choice for just 99 cents. The deal at Hart Spectrum is valid through June 1.

Dan Carney, automotive writer and North American Car of the Year judge, spread the word on Twitter after hearing about the campaign on the radio. Car and Driver magazine looked further and found that the promotion applies to the purchase of a 2020 or 2021 Titan or Titan XD and includes a two-year, 10,000-mile-per-year lease on a LEAF. According to the magazine, "There is no monthly fee and customers will continue to be eligible for the federal EV tax credit."

Currently, Hart Nissan's online inventory has a total of 23 Titans and Titan XDs in SV, PRO-4X, and Platinum Reserve trim levels. Prices range from a low of $42,242 to a high of $66,580. Nissan has significantly updated the Titan lineup for the 2020 model year with a new look, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a new 9-speed automatic transmission, and the Safety Shield 360 suite as standard equipment.

Hart Nissan currently has five Leaf EVs in stock: one is a 2020 model and the rest are 2021 models. All are Plus models; the Leaf Plus, introduced for the 2019 model year, has a more powerful 160 kW electric motor and a larger 62 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This combination delivers 214 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The base model, the S Plus, has the longest cruising range of 226 miles. Its more well-equipped sibling has a range of 215 miles (8.2 km) on a full charge.

It will be interesting to see how many people take this unusual deal; one thing is for sure, the lease price will help offset the cost of filling up the thirsty 5.6-liter V8-powered Titan. The four-wheel-drive Titan SV Crew Cab has fuel economy ratings of 15 city, 21 highway, and 18 combined mpg. the PRO-4X is even tougher, drinking the highest at 15, 20 and 17 respectively.
