Apple WWDC2021 Keynote Unveils - iOS15, macOS12, and What Else to Expect

Apple has made it official. The keynote for the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference is set for Monday, June 7, when we will get our first official look at iOS15, macOS 12, watchOS 8, and other software Apple has in development will be.

The keynote will take place on June 7 at 1pm ET/10am PST and will kick off the developer session of Apple's virtual conference.

We already knew when Apple would hold this year's WWDC. In March, Apple had set the dates for June 7 through June 11. And since the keynote usually kicks off the developer conference, it didn't take much guesswork to figure out when Apple executives would take the stage for this year's announcement. Still, it's nice to have an official date and time for the keynote, which will surely be streamed on Apple's website.

WWDC is held annually and is an opportunity for Apple to speak directly with developers and unveil new software and tools to prepare apps for the latest versions of Apple's operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV The event will be held at the Apple Convention Center. Because this is a developer-focused event, Apple typically does not make many hardware announcements at WWDC. Last year, for example, the company unveiled the Apple Silicon (an Apple chip currently found in some Mac hardware) for the first time.

WWDC is two weeks away, and here is what Apple is likely to say at this year's show.

Much of the focus this spring has been on iOS 14.5-the update was released in April and brought significant new features. But now Apple's attention is turning to a software update scheduled for the fall.

There should be a preview of iOS 15 at WWDC 2021. Apple is expected to add more notification controls, widgets for the iPad home screen, and a new privacy menu. The look of the software may also change based on some leaked app icons.

Expect to hear about Apple's beta program for iPhone software updates in addition to iOS 15 previews. Developers will likely get a copy of the software during WWDC and a public beta will follow.

Mac software will also take an important stage at WWDC, so expect to hear a lot about macOS 12 updates at this year's conference.

There are few rumors about what Apple has planned for Mac software, so any news at this point would be good news. After the significant changes Apple introduced in last year's macOS Big Sur update, this seems to suggest that this will be a fairly modest update.

Like iOS 15, macOS 12 will likely come in the form of a developer beta during the show.

The next big software update for the Apple Watch should also get attention at WWDC as Apple previews watchOS 8. Given Apple's focus on fitness in recent years, new features will likely be added to the Workout and Health apps. Mental health may also be on the Apple Watch's agenda.

In addition to other software previews, Apple will show off the software that powers the Apple TV. However, with the new Apple TV 4K to be announced, the tvOS 15 preview is expected to be more brief than usual.

A year after Apple announced plans to manufacture its own processors for its laptops, it unveiled M1 versions of the iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, with all Macs running on its own silicon by 2022. There may be a progress report on Apple's plan.

The Apple M2 chip is currently in production and is rumored to be ready in July. If so, Apple could provide an update there. Especially if the M2 drives hardware of particular interest to developers, such as the 16-inch MacBook Pro or the 27-inch iMac, for example.

While WWDC's keynote speech will capture the most public attention, it is not the only notable event scheduled for this year's developer conference: on Monday, June 7 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, there will be a more in-depth look at Apple's various platforms. On Thursday, June 10 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, Apple will present an award for the best-designed app of the year, and on Thursday, June 11 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, Apple will present an award for the best-designed app of the year.
