Verizon offers free Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass for up to 1 year — How to Get It

Customers on Verizon's Unlimited plan already have access to Disney Plus, Discovery Plus, and Apple Music, but now it's for gaming fans: starting May 25, anyone on an Unlimited, Play More, or Get More plan will add either Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass for free.

Here's how to take advantage of this promotion Unlimited plan subscribers will have access to one of the gaming services for 6 months, and Play More and Get More plan subscribers will have access to one of the gaming services for 12 months. Verizon is hoping to attract gamers by marketing the wireless 5G ultra-wideband as ideal for gaming, assuming they live in service areas with high signal strength.

For individuals, unlimited is $70, Play More is $80, and Get More is $90. The latter two include a 15GB or 30GB tethered unlimited hotspot, a Disney bundle (Hulu, Disney Plus, ESPN Plus) and 12 months of Discovery Plus; Play More customers get 6 months of Apple Music, Get More customers will receive an ongoing subscription. In contrast, Unlimited customers will only have access to the Disney Bundle for six months.

Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass are essentially subscription-based gaming services similar to Xbox Game Pass. Each service costs $5 per month and offers a selection of games that can be downloaded at any time; typical Apple Arcade titles include "NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition," "The Oregon Trail," and "Fantasian. The last title was produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series. Apple Arcade has over 180 games, with more titles being added every week.

Google Play Pass extends beyond games, including popular titles such as "Stardew Valley," "Monument Valley 2," and "Terraria," but also "Photo Studio Pro," "Floor Plan Creator, and Password Safe. While Apple was able to acquire some strong exclusive titles, by comparison, Google's Play Pass offers greater value, offering more than 800 games and apps for the same price. Of course, some may argue that the value of being able to play exclusive games like "Simon's Cat: Story Time" and "Star Trek: Legends" is more than the Google Play Pass.

Both Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass allow you to play games on a touchscreen, but both support controllers like those mentioned in our ranking of the best Bluetooth controllers. Controller support varies by game.
