Audi charging hub can solve the biggest EV challenges

Since EV charging can be a drag on the power grid, Audi has devised a new type of "charging hub" that aims to reduce the burden and at the same time make charging very fast.

The idea, detailed in the press release, is that Audi EV owners can reserve a slot and enjoy charging speeds of up to 300 kW. The key here is that the hubs are powered by lithium-ion batteries and are charged at night to avoid overloading the power grid.

While gas-powered vehicles wreak havoc on the environment, we have spent decades making the process of refueling incredibly convenient. Because it doesn't take that much electricity to pump gasoline, they also use relatively little power to refuel. Electric vehicles do not have that luxury.

EV owners often say that if they charge their car overnight, it will be full in the morning. Invariably, the owner may not be able to charge the car during the night time for some reason. So how do you solve that? Audi believes this battery-powered charging hub is the solution. Unlike Tesla's Supercharging Network, you don't have to own an Audi EV to plug in, making EV charging more ubiquitous.

Each hub will have up to six charging stations, all connected to a battery system with 2.45 MWh of power. For reference, 1 MWh is 1000 kWh, and the battery capacity of most electric vehicles is less than 100 kWh. In other words, this is a lot of power, and these hubs will not easily run out of power.

However, there are solar panels to provide additional auxiliary charging during the day. Not only does this reduce the burden on the power grid during the nighttime charging cycle, but the energy comes from clean, renewable energy sources.

The batteries used are what are called "second life" batteries, which are recycled and reused; as EV batteries reach the end of their useful life, new recycling companies are emerging to reuse materials to make new batteries. Because lithium-ion batteries use minerals that require environmentally hazardous mining, recycling is critical to bringing new batteries to market CNBC has provided some of these companies with a video detailing what it takes to recycle batteries

In addition, the company has also provided a video to some of these companies detailing what it takes to recycle batteries.

In addition, Audi states that these hubs "can be quickly transported, installed, and adapted to individual locations. If Audi's pilot operation is successful, these stations could be deployed quickly.

Pilot planning is scheduled to begin in Germany at the end of the summer, and the results will be used to determine how future hubs are implemented.
