In Windows10May2021update, these features have been removed

Microsoft has distributed the Windows 10 May 2021 Update. With it, it introduced some updated features and said goodbye to some others.

It is not uncommon to wave the Windows wand and remove features from the OS in one fell swoop, but it is occasionally necessary to refine the OS in a kind of digital housecleaning. Sometimes Microsoft replaces these features with new options, effectively shelving the old features. Other times, they remove old features altogether.

So, Windows 10 has been replaced. Unfortunate features to be booted this time include legacy Microsoft Edge and XDDM-based remote display drivers.

Microsoft recently announced that it is dropping support for Chromium-based Edge after announcing it. This echoes news that Microsoft 365 apps are saying goodbye to Internet Explorer 11 and that Microsoft is considering pulling the plug on IE in 2022.

As for the XDDM-based remote display driver, it is unlikely to cause much concern for the average user.

In addition to this, Microsoft has deprecated several other features.

One such feature is "personalization roaming" settings such as slideshows, wallpaper, lock screen images and accent colors, which Microsoft adds that it "may be removed in a future release" entirely, at least for the near future for which it is currently in a development halt.

The setting was essentially a way to sync your visual preferences with other Windows-based devices. Earth-shattering? Not so much. But it was nice to have.

Obviously, decisions like this are taken based on the merits of the study before being put into action. Another feature to be shelved is Windows Management Instrumentation Command-Line (WMIC), which has been "superseded by Windows PowerShell for WMI". Note: This deprecation only applies to the Command-Line Management Tool; WMI itself is not affected.

On another more uplifting note, Microsoft has upgraded some Microsoft Teams videos to give hosts better control over who is on screen. Hosts will be able to disable or enable video for specific attendees and turn off the feed for everyone on the call.
