Samsung concept device shows off stunning foldable phone of the future

As part of its Display Week exhibit, Samsung unveiled several foldable display prototypes that could be featured in future products.

While Samsung is not the first in consumer foldable phones, and that honor goes to Royole FlexPai, the tech giant has truly embraced this technology more than most smartphone manufacturers. These demonstrations of rollable and foldable displays (via SamMobile) further confirm that the company is not leaving this field anytime soon.

The first concept demonstrated is a two-fold design tentatively named the S-Foldable OLED panel. This display can be used as part of a foldable or collapsible device and can be folded twice for added versatility.

When the screen is fully extended, it measures 7.2 inches. Comparisons have also been made with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 released last year, which clearly has an additional folding point.

The next display is a rollable panel that can be extended without folding. This could help eliminate one of the biggest problems users face with foldable phones: damage when folding. The screen on this Samsung concept stretches horizontally in a similar fashion to the Oppo X 2021 demonstrated earlier this year.

Perhaps most impressively, Samsung showed off a display that hints at a foldable Galaxy Tab. This 17-inch foldable panel is large enough that it could potentially be used as a tablet when folded and as a monitor when fully extended.

This concept points to the possibility of foldable tablets and other devices that go beyond foldable cell phones and rollable TVs to flexible panel technology.

Samsung also showed a laptop with an under-display camera. Removing the punch-hole camera is becoming quite the trend in the smartphone world; the ZTE Axon 20 5G was the first smartphone with an under-display camera last year. And a recent Google patent suggests that the Google Pixel 7 could also have a camera under the display.

As for Samsung's foldable concepts, it is worth noting that not all of the company's prototypes and demonstrations will eventually make it into consumers' hands. Therefore, there is no guarantee that these foldable designs will be widely adopted.

However, Samsung appears to be fully on board with foldable phones and is reportedly preparing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 for release this summer. In other words, Samsung seems poised to continue making handsets with foldable displays.
