Lamborghini is electric — here's what to expect

All automakers are forced to convert to all-electric sooner or later, but Lamborghini has made it clear that it falls into the "sooner rather than later" category.

The Italian automaker has unveiled its electrification roadmap, showing how it will ditch gasoline and internal combustion engines. It all starts in 2023 with the company's first production model, the Hybrid Series. But the all-electric models will come much later.

Lamborghini has dabbled in hybrids before, with a limited edition Sián Hybrid hypercar in 2019. Only 63 of them were built, but the new hybrid will be an important part of Lamborghini's vehicle portfolio.

Things are scheduled to move quite rapidly after 2023. Lamborghini has promised to have hybrid versions of all its cars by the end of 2024. The only timeframe Lamborghini has announced is that it will be available by 2030, but there will also be an all-electric model, the fourth car in the new electrified lineup.

In other words, we may be waiting a very long time for Lamborghini to ditch all gasoline. One can only hope that the next wave of Lamborghini hybrids will be plug-in models, rather than the old-style hybrids that use fossil fuels to power electric motors. Like the Toyota Prius.

The good news is that Lamborghini EVs are not going to sacrifice performance by making the switch. In fact, the automaker claims that the car will be "the brightest star in the constellation" with "amazing performance" that will put it "at the top of the segment." In other words, it will offer the Lamborghini experience, albeit one that runs on electricity.

Lamborghini comments on the difficulty of balancing power, weight, and battery capacity. Lamborghini commented on the difficulty of balancing power, weight, and battery capacity: "A hypercar is nothing if it doesn't have the power to go ridiculously fast. Or if it does not have the battery capacity to go more than a few miles at that speed, it is nothing. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out over the next nine years.

Of course, Lamborghini does not intend to let fossil fuels quietly disappear. Lamborghini has announced a "celebration of internal combustion engines" and the addition of two new cars to its V12 engine lineup. That means business as usual until 2023.
