After years of talking about the potential of the electric Boxster, Porsche is about to make this car a reality. The first step in that process? The development of a concept car.

The news comes from Porsche itself. Development executive Michael Steiner admitted that the company is pushing ahead with the development of an electric concept car for the Boxster. However, it is not clear when we will see it or how long it will take to develop a production model.

Porsche had previously promised to launch an electric Boxster by 2022, as well as an electric Cayman and its plug-in hybrid version. Porsche has worked on other prototypes in the past, but admitted that those models were too heavy for development.

Porsche wants its electric cars to offer drivers the same experience as gasoline-powered cars, which is understandable. When buying a Porsche, it is natural to want to own a car that is quick, easy to control, and looks great. A bulky, heavy electric car will do none of those things, and it will also affect range. And range will be affected.

Now, however, these problems seem to be getting closer to being solved. While it is not clear when Porsche will unveil the concept, the fact that they are talking positively about unveiling the concept suggests that they are making good progress

The only question is, will the Porsche Boxster EV go into mass production, and if so, when? It took the company five years to turn the Mission E concept into the electric Taycan. As a result, the prospects for an electric Boxster or Cayman in the next couple of years are not very good. Contrary to Porsche's previous promises.

The only thing we know for sure is that the new cars will not be built on Volkswagen's PPE electric platform like the upcoming Macan EV. Instead, Porsche has already announced that the production Boxster EV will be built on a different, unannounced platform that we know little about.
