Oculus Quest2 can Get an Android App — What We Know

Oculus Quest 2 may now support Android apps, allowing VR headsets to access Zoom, Spotify, TikTok, and more.

This is based on a screenshot from Twitter user @TheMysticle, who found the Android app selection under the Preview Apps section of the Oculus store. This section is primarily used for early access to the native Quest app, suggesting that Facebook may be testing this feature right now.

Further evidence that this feature may be coming comes from the fact that the developer name is "Android Apps for Quest" and the associated website is Oculus' own. Attached screenshots show that popular apps such as Zoom, TikTok, Spotify, Snap, Along Us, Calm, and LinkedIn can all be viewed in VR.

At the time of this writing, I was unable to replicate this on my own Oculus Quest 2, as well as Android Central, which I tested on many headsets. However, the site did get a non-guaranteed response from Facebook that there was nothing to share at this time. The fact that it showed up on at least one headset suggests that this may be a test feature awaiting rollout to more users.

Facebook has been generous in adding new features to its hardware after release, as evidenced by the recent adoption of 120Hz visuals and AirLink wireless PC play. Compared to these features, adding Android app support would be a piece of cake. After all, Oculus Quest 2 runs on a modified version of Android, and technically any APK file can be sideloaded to the headset. [Like a web browser, the app just appears in a floating window on the homescreen; there is an official Quest version of Netflix, but you can't download shows for offline viewing.

And whether or not the experience is VR-native, there are certainly advantages to running Android apps on Quest. Being able to check messaging apps and social media feeds without having to remove the headset would be an advantage to start with.

From the screenshots shared by @TheMysticle, it appears that Facebook does not intend to completely remove the wall from its "walled garden" store. In any case, it will be interesting to see if this is intentional or just a side effect of testing and will be removed once the feature is officially released.
