Asus Zenfone8 Flip Leak Reveals Flip camera and Killer Chip

There is more than one way to save screen space on a flagship device. iPhone 13 is rumored to shrink the notch that houses the front camera and Face ID sensor, but Asus seems to be taking a different approach with its upcoming Zenfone 8 family. And if you've been following the recent Zenfone releases, you should be well aware of that.

Prior to the Zenfone release, 91mobiles released a series of photos along with detailed specs of the new Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip. It is unclear when these phones will ship, but the Zenfone 8 Flip will stand out from the smartphone crowd with its rather unique camera design. Well, unique for a phone not manufactured by Asus.

According to information from leaker Ishan Agarwal, the Zenfone 8 Flip will feature a triple camera setup, housed in a flipping mechanism that allows the camera to rotate on the top edge of the phone.

In other words, you would take selfies with the same camera used for other images taken with the phone. In addition to looking a bit odd, this should help with selfies, since the camera is flipped upward and positioned over the frame of the phone.

Those who saw the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro last year will be familiar with this approach; the Zenfone 6 offered something similar, but only with wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses.

Agarwal's leak also includes specs for these three lenses on the Zenfone 8 Flip, with the 64MP main camera joined by an 8MP telephoto lens and a 12MP macro shooter. In other words, the macro lens replaces the Zenfone 7 Pro's ultra-wide-angle camera. [The Zenfone 8, on the other hand, appears to have a more orthodox design, with two rear cameras (a 64MP main shooter and a 12MP macro lens). The rendered image shows a punch hole cutout to accommodate the front camera, which will not be flipped on this phone.

Additional specs indicate that the Zenfone 8 Flip will offer the larger of the two screens, 6.67 inches versus the Zenfone 8's 5.92 inches. Both models offer FHD+ resolution, but 91mobiles reports that only the Flip is listed with a faster refresh rate (90Hz in this case).

Both Zenfone 8 models will be powered by the same Snapdragon 888, and the Zenfone 8 Flip is expected to offer more storage, 256GB versus 128GB for the Zenfone 8. According to Agarwal, the Flip will also have a battery larger, 5,000 mAh versus 4,000 mAh.

Unfortunately, this leaked information does not include pricing or release information. However, a countdown clock on Asus' website points to a Zenfone 8 launch event next Wednesday, May 12, at 1 pm ET. We imagine any questions about the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip will be answered then.
