Apple AirTag — This is how easy it is to scratch

The Apple AirTag is finished in stark white plastic and metal, but it will be lucky if it keeps its appearance for long.

YouTuber Zack Nelson, aka JerryRigsEverything, is known for his smartphone durability testing and disassembly. This time, he took a bunch of mineral picks to a freshly unboxed AirTag in a recent video. And it turns out that it doesn't take much to put a DIY imprint on an AirTag.

Nelson was able to scratch the stainless steel side of the AirTag using a copper pick, but the metal itself was not scratched, only the shiny finish.

The white plastic could also be easily scratched with a stainless steel knife blade, but because it has a glossy finish rather than a reflective finish, the scratches were harder to find. The video then cracks open the AirTag to reveal the battery, circular circuit board, and speaker. Fortunately, this requires a lot of effort, so at least we don't have to worry about the AirTag cracking in two.

This is not surprising information. Early adopters have already pointed out that it is not that common to damage an AirTag, even accidentally.

Even if one buys an Apple keychain or luggage loop designed to fit the AirTag, the center of both sides is still exposed.

Perhaps the fact that the AirTag is prone to breakage is sort of irrelevant, since the AirTag does not need to remain in perfect condition to serve its purpose of helping people find misplaced items. On the other hand, at $30, this tracker is quite expensive for a key finder, so it might be reasonable to expect premium features like a more durable exterior.

However, AirTag's reviewers cannot fault its functionality; if you are an iPhone user, the simple setup and precise locating features mean it beats the competition, but Android users would definitely be better off looking elsewhere.
