Old Samsung phones are getting this killer Galaxy S21 camera upgrade

The Samsung Galaxy S21 may be the latest flagship smartphone from the South Korean tech giant, but the company has not yet abandoned last year's Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy S20. One of the Galaxy S21's coolest camera features is coming to the handset this month.

Director's View is a mode from the Galaxy S21 that will be available on both the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 this month. It allows users to shoot video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously. This means that if you are on camera duty at an exciting moment, you can capture your reaction as well as everyone in front of the camera. In addition, you can see live thumbnails of possible recording angles and switch between ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with a simple tap.

SamMobile found this feature in Samsung's May 2021 security patch, which is a slightly scaled-down version of Director's View.

Named Dual Recording, this feature allows users to record video using the front and rear cameras simultaneously. A thumbnail view is also present, showing the video from either the front or rear camera. Missing is the ability to switch between all rear lenses.

Supported devices include the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20, and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Once your device has received the security update, open the camera app and scroll down to "Extras" where you will find the new dual recording mode. To check for updates, go to your phone's settings and navigate to the "Software Update" menu.

If you are a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE owner, there is no word on whether dual recording is headed your way yet. It's unclear if Samsung plans to roll this feature out to foldable devices, but owners of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be hoping that it will be included in their devices as well.

The update is making its way to Samsung phones over the course of May, so keep checking for updates. If you have an eligible phone, dual recording should be heading your way soon.
