Nintendo Switch Pro may be delayed Release Date — Here's why

The Nintendo Switch Pro may not be coming soon after all. Instead of slowing down production of the four-year-old Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is reportedly increasing production of its flagship console throughout the current fiscal year.

According to Nikkei Asia, Nintendo plans to produce 30 million Switch units between now and the end of March 2022.3]

In contrast, Sony announced in its latest earnings report that it sold nearly 8 million PS5 units when it launched in November, according to Statista, 12 million Xbox Series X units are expected to be sold worldwide in 2021.

Nintendo Switch 30 million units is an ambitious supply. The report suggests that Nintendo is optimistic that demand for its current console will continue.

The huge production target also suggests that expectations for the Nintendo Switch Pro and other next-generation Switches should be tempered. At least for the time being, or until there is more substantial evidence indicating the launch of a high-end Switch replacement.

And that doesn't mean it's not still a possibility this year. After all, the latest Nintendo Switch firmware code seems to confirm that a 4K Switch Pro is in the planning stages. Nikkei Asia's information does not specifically state that Nintendo's production plans exclude sales estimates for existing Nintendo Switch Lite and upcoming Nintendo Switch models.

Given the success of Sony and Microsoft's recent consoles, Nintendo may want to introduce a new device of its own. Indeed, the company suffered severe inventory shortages in the early days of the pandemic (buyers were frantically Googling where to buy a Nintendo Switch). But that episode pales in comparison to the unwavering publicity for the restocking of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X.

There is no arguing that the Nintendo Switch has important advantages over the latest Xbox and PlayStation. Users can take their games on the go, and if they dock the console at home, they can resume where they left off.

However, the aging Switch may be catching up. Nintendo did a slight refresh two years ago, but compared to the next-generation graphics of the Xbox Series X and PS5, the Switch's graphics may begin to look outdated. For example, the maximum resolution of "Bowser's Fury," released in February, was 792p.

The Nintendo Switch Pro is expected to rival the competition with 4K graphics capabilities and a sleek OLED display. And a device with these specs may be on the way soon; given the many leaks and reports that put the Switch Pro's release date at the end of 2021, Nikkei Asia's information should be taken with a grain of salt.
