iPad2021 and the new iMac could be hit with significant delays — here's why

Apple CEO Tim Cook warned of supply shortages due to the start of pre-orders for the iPad 2021 and the new iMac 2021. Both products can be ordered starting today, but supply constraints have already been noted.

During Apple's Q2 earnings call, CEO Cook was asked about the supply outlook for the iPad and Mac in the second half of the year; the semiconductor shortage that is affecting products like the PS5 and Xbox Series X is spreading to everything from smartphones to automobiles. It was only a matter of time before Apple was affected.

Regarding the supply of the iPad 2021 and the new iMac (via MacRumors), Apple CFO Luca Maestri explained: "This constraint is due to a shortage of semiconductors that is affecting many industries and is seen in both the iPad and Mac. combined with the very high level of demand.

Cook elaborated further: "As for the supply shortages that Luke pointed out, those shortages primarily affect the iPad and Mac. We expect to be supply-driven, not demand-driven."

When asked when the supply problem would subside, Cook could not comment definitively, but said Apple would work to overcome the blip. He acknowledged that a wide range of industries are feeling the pinch and said that in order to "answer that question accurately," Apple needs to know "the true demand from each player and how that will change over the next few months, which makes it difficult to give a good answer."

He added that the company has a "good handle" on that demand. 'But we don't know what everybody else is doing. We do our best, that's all I can say," Cook added.

With the chip shortage set to last at least another six months, Apple will likely struggle to keep up with demand for its latest products.

If you're on the fence about ordering one, just look at the PS5 restocking situation. Despite the fact that the hardware has outsold the PS4, gamers are still clamoring to get their hands on one. If you're still holding out for a PS5, I suggest you get your pre-order in as soon as possible and get a new iMac or iPad.
