In addition to the revamped Fire HD 10 tablet announced today (April 27), Amazon also announced a new Fire tablet series aimed at pre-teens who are too old for the company's current kids' tablets but not quite ready for a full-fledged device.

The Amazon Fire Kids Pro tablets for children ages 6-12 offer more flexibility and freedom, while still allowing parents to monitor and limit what their children can see. The Fire Kids Pro is available starting at $99.

The Fire Kids Pro tablet comes in three sizes: a 7-inch model for $99, an 8-inch model for $139, and a 10-inch model for $199.

Regardless of size, the Fire Kids Pro comes with a case in one of three colors: Sky Blue, Black, Doodle, and Intergalactic. The case is slightly thinner than the ones that come with Amazon's other children's tablets and has an adjustable stand.

All Fire Kids Pro tablets include a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ ($2.99/month for Prime members) and a two-year replacement warranty if the tablet breaks.

The Fire Kids Pro tablet is essentially a slightly grown-up version of the Fire HD Kids tablet. The hardware is almost identical, but the content available on the tablet is tailored for children ages 6-12.

This includes Amazon Kids+ content such as Teen Titans Go and Asphalt 8, books such as Keeper of the Lost Cities and Chronicles of Narnia, PG and PG-13 video, National Geographic, Rabbids Coding, LEGO, and other educational content.

Additionally, the digital store allows children to request apps and download them only with parental approval. This is to allow children to use their tablets to do better research for school projects. Parents can block certain sites.

The updated home screen gives the tablet a more mature feel, and the new "For You" tab is customized based on recommended content.

The Fire Kids Pro tablets are targeted at children ages 6-12, while the Fire HD Kids tablets (Fire 7 Kids, Fire HD 8 Kids, and Fire HD 10 Kids) are targeted at children ages 3-7.

As such, the Kids Pro tablets offer more mature content, voice and video calling, and a web browser that allows children to view more of the Internet. At the same time, parents can control every aspect of the experience, including when their children can use certain apps.

In addition, the Kids Pro tablet allows voice and video calls over Wi-Fi with parent-approved contacts who have a Fire Kids tablet, Echo device, or Alexa app. Kids can also use the Alexa intercom feature to make announcements to Alexa-enabled devices throughout the house.

The introduction of the Fire Kids Pro tablet seems like Amazon is splitting hairs. If this is all software-based, why not just let the current Fire Kids tablet lineup change as the kids grow?

Still, when it comes to kids' tablets, Amazon's devices are pretty good. The real value is there.
