Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 can measure your blood pressure in this strange way

Samsung may want you to intentionally close your fingers on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. And it's all in the name of health tracking: a new patent found by LetsGoDigital details the company's idea of adding new biometric sensors to the foldable device to monitor heart health.

The illustration in the patent depicts a foldable similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including the rear camera module and front cover display. The text of the patent also mentions the possibility of this system being used in a clamshell-style foldable, so it is possible that either the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Galaxy Z Flip 3 models will feature this technology.

The patent, titled "Foldable Electronic Device and Method of Estimating Biometric Information Using It," details how this virtual system could be used to measure health factors like blood pressure and stress levels, just as the best fitness trackers and best smart watches can currently It explains. In addition, the patent describes how more complex measurements such as "vascular age, arterial stiffness, aortic pressure waveform, vascular compliance, ... . fatigue levels.

The system takes into account the user's age, gender, and BMI when making measurements. Additionally, the patent states that the system will consider any of the environmental factors to make the test more reliable.

To track these statistics, the phone will have multiple sensors mounted under the display. The sensors are attached to the outer edge of the device's display, and by closing the phone with a finger, the pressure for the measurement can be kept constant. The measurement results are shown on the internal or external display, depending on the test being performed.

If closing the fragile $2,000 folding display with your finger is stressful, Samsung has an alternative. Another is to attach a sensor to the back of the phone and hold it between the palms of your hands.

LetsGoDigital found another interesting one from Samsung's documentation. This alone doesn't mean much, but with some additional context, it may reveal Samsung's future plans for a foldable phone.

Samsung's previous trademarks for folding phones included the phrases "Galaxy Z" and "Z Flip," but this applies only to cell phones. The new trademark is a more generic name and will also apply to tablets. Samsung appears to be laying the groundwork for a folding tablet like the recently rumored Galaxy Z Fold Tab.

While a foldable Galaxy Tab is unlikely to appear this year, Samsung appears to already be working on it. One rumor even suggests that it will be available in January.

As for the new Z Fold and Z Flip models, Samsung is rumored to be preparing a launch event in the summer for both. If that turns out to be untrue, we will probably see the new foldables in the fall, a full year after the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launch. As our current pick for the best foldable phone, we are very much looking forward to seeing how Samsung improves upon the Z Fold 2 with the Z Fold 3.
