Captain America 4 is flying to the MCU — here's what you need to know

Captain America 4 will once again wield his shield in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new film is being developed by Malcolm Spellman, writer and creator of the Disney Plus series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier."

Also, although casting has not been confirmed, given the way the finale of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" ended, Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, will succeed Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as the new Captain America. There is a strong possibility that "Captain America 4" will be the first of many "Captain America" films. It is unclear how "Captain America 4" would fit in with "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" Season 2 (if the latter actually materializes).

Captain America 4 joins a number of upcoming Marvel films to be released this year, including "Black Widow," "Shanti and the Legendary Ten Rings," "The Eternals," and "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spellman will co-write the script for "Captain America 4" with "Falcon" and "Winter Soldier" staff writer Darran Matson. No director has been set.

According to THR, Marvel has not officially announced casting for the film, but Sam took on the title of Captain America at the end of "Falcon" and "The Winter Soldier" and donned a new red, white and blue wingsuit. [However, rumors are still circulating that Evans may return as Steve Rogers, but both Evans and Marvel boss Kevin Feige have denied the speculation.

Evans tweeted that his return to the MCU was "news to me." Meanwhile, Feige told EW.com, "I rarely say no to anything anymore because whatever happens always surprises me, but I think the rumor was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself."

Spellman and Masson have plenty of time to think about "Captain America 4": four films in 2021, followed by another four in 2022 ("Doctor Strange: The Madness Multiverse," "Thor: Love and Thunder," "Black Panther 2," "Captain Marvel 2"), and possibly a fifth film ("Ant-Man & Wasp Quantamania") will be released. This means that "Captain America 4" will not be released until 2023 or later.
