Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Rendering reveals the changes we want to see

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3 (or Galaxy Z Flip 2) will be available this summer. There are some changes afoot for Samsung's foldable flip phone, although it seems unlikely to deviate from its clamshell design. Some new Galaxy Z Flip 3 renderings give us a great idea of what the smartphone will look like based on rumors.

The images, courtesy of LetsGoDigital's in-house designer Giuseppe Spinelli, show off the device in four of the rumored eight colors: black, beige, green, and violet. If all the credible leaks and rumors are correct, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, along with the features seen in Samsung's patent, will be quite similar to the device shown here.

The most notable difference between the Galaxy Z Flip and its successor is the front panel. The existing foldable has a 1.1" AMOLED cover display. This screen can display notifications and can also be used as a very small viewfinder to take selfies.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3, on the other hand, could have a much larger screen on the front. A patent discovered by LetsGoDigital last year shows off a much larger cover display, which would be a big improvement for the new model. Another change that will attract new users is the addition of a third camera to the main array. The Galaxy Z Flip has a pair of 12MP lenses on the "back" and a 10MP front-facing camera when the device is unfolded; the third lens could be the telephoto lens found on most premium devices.

The Galaxy Z Flip also has a rather large bezel, which is not ideal under normal circumstances. Not if you've just handed over $1,449 / £1399 / AU$2,599, which was the price of the foldable handset before it was reduced in February in the US. Now you can get it for $1,199, the same as the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Rendered images of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 boast slim, almost non-existent bezels, which will be very satisfying for fans.

Other improvements rumored for the foldable, though not as easy to spot in the rendered images, include a revamped hinge and a sturdier new frame.

The Galaxy Z Flip is somewhat chunky, and Samsung is trying to make a slimmer clamshell (as found in another patent). Thinner frames can cause problems with respect to the physical buttons on the side of the smartphone. The solution proposed in this patent is to enlarge the touch-sensitive area around the buttons, thereby reducing the precision required to use the buttons.

We do not know how many of these features will be included in the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which will be released this summer, or if the foldable will look like these concept images. But we definitely want to see Samsung go in this direction with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
