Volkswagen ID.6: Price, release date, inside, range and more

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.6, an all-electric SUV with seating for up to seven passengers that rivals the Tesla Model X.

The ID.6 is the German automaker's largest EV to date and is based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) platform used in other models in the rapidly expanding ID. series. Its big selling point may be its spacious interior, but the SUV will be available in several different options, centered around two core editions, the ID.6 Crozz and ID.6 X. The ID.6 will be available in 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options, with more powerful models offering up to 365 miles of range. Information known so far is as follows.

Currently, the Volkswagen ID.6 is targeted at the Chinese market and will be built in China: the VW ID.6 Crozz version will be assembled at the FAW-Volkswagen plant in Foshan, while the ID.6 X will be assembled at the Shanghai Automotive Volkswagen plant in Anting The price has not been announced yet. Pricing has not yet been announced, but is known to be available by the end of 2021.

The VW ID.6 will be built on the VW MEB platform and will be available in two core models.

First there is the ID.6 Crozz, which has a funky name but is not overshadowed by the bright orange exterior of the examples we have seen. The ID.6 X, on the other hand, has an equally flashy purple exterior. To complement their unique exteriors, both cars will also have distinctly different interior designs: a choice of 19-, 20-, or 21-inch wheels; a choice of a new, more modern, and more modern interior design; and a choice of a new, more modern, and more modern interior design, with a new, more modern interior design.

Along with styling, another major selling point of this large SUV is its ability to seat up to seven passengers, and a central 12-inch infotainment touchscreen replaces many of the usual physical buttons and switches; VW's Hello ID Voice control and augmented reality heads-up display are available as options.

The overall theme of the interior seems to be "less is more," and the large panoramic glass roof adds to the overall sense of space. An open version of the panoramic roof is also likely to be an option; the ID.6 is 2,965 mm long, slightly longer than VW's ID.4 and about 30 cm longer to accommodate additional seating.

Since the VW ID.6 is based on the MEB platform, the battery and powertrain setup is comparable to other ID models: 58 kWh and 77 kWh batteries are available, a 132 kW single motor or called 4MOTION Three different powertrains are expected to be available, including a 150 kW dual motor. If the latter is selected, the 0-62 mph acceleration will be approximately 6.6 seconds.

Depending on which battery package is chosen, the range is estimated at 271 or 365 miles based on China's NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). In actual use, it is likely to be shorter. The smaller model is only available with rear-wheel drive, but if a larger battery is selected, it will offer 300 bhp of power and a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The capacity is, in essence, the same as that found in the VW ID.4 SUV.

The main attraction of the VW ID.6 is its livability, with space for up to six or seven passengers, depending on the model you choose. The interior of the long wheelbase is particularly attractive with its minimalist layout featuring captain's chair seats and ample space. The dashboard features a touchscreen, and switches and buttons are kept to a minimum. A panoramic roof is also available as an option, adding even more space.

VW is also packing a lot of technology in the VW ID.6, and the augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD) is likely to appeal to many buyers. Also, the Volkswagen ID. lights and IQ. Drive features, including the latest generation of Travel Assist, add weight to the SUV's drivability despite its imposing size.

The VW ID.6 is aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, at least for now. In fact, VW plans to launch a total of eight ID. models in China by 2023 and hopes to have half of its vehicles sold in China be exclusively electric by 2030.

However, its large size and accommodating interior give the ID.6 clear potential in the U.S. market, as does the seven-seat Mercedes-Benz EQB, also unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show.

As a result, it is quite possible that this model, or at least something similar based on the MEB platform, will eventually be produced at VW's North American plant in Chattanooga. Attention.
