The new Apple TV Siri Remote has a big weakness — here's why

Apple's new Apple TV 4K has a more powerful processor and color-balancing capabilities, as well as an all-new Siri Remote. But don't expect to be able to find that remote automatically if it should go missing.

According to early information, the Siri Remote does not have a U1 chip similar to the one found in iPhone 11 and later. This chip is what the new AirTag tracker uses to connect to your phone and allow it to track your valuables through Apple's "Find My" app. And that means it cannot track your remote control in a similar way.

Now, to be clear, Apple has never promised that Siri Remote can be tracked. A remote control for any device is one of the easiest things in the house to lose. You're in the middle of steaming a pot of coffee, or you've taken it to the kitchen. Have kids? Then it could be literally anywhere; being able to track it to the edge of the yard with an iPhone would be a great feature.

Apple confirmed to The Verge that the new remote control does not have a U1 chip. Disappointing to some Apple watchers who have probably lost many other remotes over the years.

Interestingly, the Apple TV 4K 2021 box itself has a U1 chip, which can report where other devices are and take advantage of features that may appear in the future.

MacRumors suggests that the new iPad Pro does not have a U1 chip either. This means that the chip is currently found in the iPhone 11 and 12 models and Apple's HomePod Mini. Perhaps Apple believes that the U1 chip is best suited for use in devices such as phones, rather than tablets or remote controls, but the strategy here seems perhaps a bit haphazard.

One workaround would be to attach an AirTag to the remote control so that it knows where the Siri Remote is. Perhaps someone could even make a small case for the controller that would allow the two devices to be paired together.
